Can anyone recommend a camera to take on a Scenic tours- African Safari tour?
I have a Nikon D810 with a Nikkor AF-S 28-300mm Lens and was thinking of investing in either a Sigma 150-600mm of Nikkor 200-500mm lens to give me some longer reach. However as this is not specifically a photographic tour I was looking for something more convenient ( lighter and less cumbersome), without sacrificing too much in terms of image quality.
I have been looking favourably at both the Sony RX10mark iv and the Nikon Coolpix P1000.
Any Comments or suggestion greatly appreciated.
Rob

I took a D500 and 200-500 Lens. I let my daughter use our Sony a600 with the 5-210 Lens.

The Nikon 200-500 has given my countless great shots. It is DESIGNED to work ONLY with your Nikon camera, not everyone else's camera like Sigma. And that fact alone should sell you. The Nikon 200-500 is a bargain at list price, but now it is on sale for $1256.95. I have found the lens sharp at all lengths and have sold my Nikon 300 2.8 and 200-400 f4 because the 200-500 is that sharp.
Buy it now, I do not know how much longer it will be on sale.

Below is a grab shot hand held with the Nikon 200-500.

Thanks JCCash- The Nikon 200-500mm is a particularly impressive lens. Great shot of the bird above!- v. sharp!
Do you not find it a burden weight wise etc,. when travelling around?? Do you use a tripod when travelling with it or do use it a lot hand held?

I took a D810 and AFS 300mm f/4 with TC17EII (other glass as well but this was the longest). My wife took a E-M5m2 with Panasonic 100mm~300mm f/4~5.6 We both achieved many excellent images.

You've got a great camera, why not take a great lens? The 200 - 500 is that.

You would love the P1000 for such a trip, but can I make a suggestion, Rob?? Take a look at the Coolpix P900 rather than the P1000. Smaller. Lighter Weight. 2000mm will prove to be more than enough reach. Half the cost of the P1000. Probably less investment than you would spend on the lens' you are looking at. And then you will have a great Backup camera to your D810 for the future. (unless you do a lot of RAW!)

What ever you decide, have a Great Trip and stay safe!!!!!

Based on photog friends who have gone on photo safaris to Africa, you likely won't need the huge reach. 95% of the time the longest reach used was 300. You'll also find that you are limited by weight. Less is more!
