Many thanks for all who contributed their thoughts on my indecisiveness over FX and various camera considered, however I have decided after much reading and watching on you tube to stay with and fall in love again with my d7100 DX
WHY ?
Well so many good things said about it,I thought I would edge towards the better cat images I was seeking by learning more and using/putting into practice FLASH !!!!! Not pop up but have invested in a decent ttl flash and defusers etc, hoping this will lead to what I seek.

Many thanks most interesting, take a while to digest.

I switched from my D7000 to a D750 and, for the kind of images I capture, the change has been dramatic for me. Very happy with the new equipment. D7000 still has a place in my work, but D750 has become the workhorse.

A very wise decision, Graham … you already HAVE one of the best DX cameras Nikon has ever produced!!!
There are only the D7200 and the D500 - better, and - perhaps (just, perhaps, only marginally) - the new D7500. Speaking of "marginally" - I was, wasn't I? … The increase in overall light admitted with a FF camera, amounts to no more than ONE STOP!!!! … And, to get there, you need buy much more expensive lenses than you need for a DX camera, PLUS - you have to put up with all that extra weight, too!!!!!
Glad you came to your senses, Graham, and decided to stay with your beloved D7100 (my best DX, too!) and I wish you good luck with your new flash unit - mated to Nikon's best DX cameras - it is, isn't it?

Yup!!! … No more sleepless nights worrying about it, Graham - glad you made a solid decision, at long last!
So, did you check thoroughly, to make sure your new flash unit, will work properly with the D7100?
Which one did you get? … May I ask?

Good choice Graham. DX is a wonderful format to create images.

Wow, Graham!!!! … Matilda looks quite austere in this shot … are you sure that's what you want?
She's about four shades lighter, there, in your Avatar …
OR, is THIS - a different cat, Graham?

Oh, really? … I didn't realize Yongnuo - had updated their 685 model.

It looks like the flash is near or on the camera, and directly aimed at the cat.
Try bounce light - much more flattering.
