To the OP, I think different airlines might have different policies, so you should check. I usually put mine in checked luggage, but I went on a photo trip and a lot of us ended up on the same planes. Several of the other photographers had tripods attached to their camera backpacks and all was fine. And, this was even though I had to go through security with TSA-Precheck and they still made me pull out my camera and show that it worked, which I haven't had to do anywhere else, so the security was tough, but they still let the tripods on board. I have no recollection what kind of feet they had.

Security in the US IS provided by the TSA. I assume yuo will also have a checked bag? Boutique Air uses small planes, so space and weight will be the problems you might encounter.

Actually I’m going to try and get by with just the carry on and my backpack because of Boutique Air’s limitations. If I could guarantee my ‘extra’ checked bag ( which United allows) would make it on the plane I would definitely check the tripod but no camera gear. Actually Boutique will let you bring it if there’s room and weight available. Otherwise it will come on the next flight when there is. No experience with what my chances are of it making it on my flight.

Are you going to count that as your personal item or are you going to make it fit in your carryon? It sounds like you can check on bag on the first fight but the commuter has limited space so you won't be able to take very much except for what you can carry.

Personal item will be my backpack with my camera gear and small purse inside. That will go under the seat on United and in my lap on Boutique. Carryon will be my clothes, bare essentials and tripod. That will go in overhead on United and in luggage area on Boutique. The more I say it, the more I’m convincing myself I can do it...all under 50 pounds.

Last year. TSA asked I open my carryon containing a tripod. But I also had a camera bag and agents were guessing tripod before I got it opened. I think it was experience TSA eyes verses new guy. Minor delay.

On some of those small commuters you might need help storing the tripod during the flight. But the job gets done one way or another.

I travel a lot with camera gear as carry on and tripods have never been an issue. Backpacks full of bodies and lenses and tripods have never been an issue for additional inspection. Often, when I see TSA looking intently at their screen, I will call out "camera equipment" and I will get a nod. The only multiple times my gear has undergone additional search is when I pack a "bean bag". I tried to change the material inside the bean bag from rice to beans to crushed walnut shells and it does not seem to matter, they are confused at the "mass" of the object. When I can I will now throw the bean bag into the checked luggage or just leave it at home. I admit that I am spoiled in that I have life long elite status on American Airlines and TSA PreCheck and they hardly ever give me any issues about all the gear I take on board.

You've just given me one more reason to avoid Jet Blue at all costs. Glad they don't "serve" the west coast.

Useless rhetoric.

We booked a flight which ends with a commuter flight on Boutique Air. This is for a photo tour, so my tripod is essential. We are limited to one standard carryon and a personal item. In the past I have always packed my tripod in my checked bag. Anyone have any experience whether a tripod will clear security? My recollection is they are not as strict as TSA, but I have to clear TSA on my United portion of the trip. Any comments or sharing of your experience will be appreciated.

I’ve put my tripod in my checked baggage numerous times. No problem.

recently on the way back from northeast to FL where we live now I had problems.
I have a portable scale to weigh my bag. It was not working.
So I was 12 lbs over going on JetBlue. I had stripped as much as I could.

Coming back I was with family and used an extra carry on bag. Still got
stopped for my wife suitcase and mine. They charged me for one overweight.
$150 each way. I was 4 lbs over coming back. I charged my client the xtra $300
he was not happy about that.
I was amazed that slipped my manfrotto monied into the sleeve on the Tarmac camera bag
no problem. If security was really security would they let stuff like this go by. Hmmm...
I am going to buy the cheap scale that is a hanger to weigh the bags.
We had a lot of stuff we were away for a month.
I always put tripods in my check in luggage. br r... (show quote)

No way I would pay such a ridiculous charge. The local manager and I would resolve eye to eye.

Sorry, they don’t get to charge both ways. What ate you misrepresenting?

I recently flew on JetBlue and I had my tripod fastened on the outside of my camera backpack (There is a slot that will fit 2 of the 3 feet and straps to hold it in place). No one said a word about it. I have the FEISOL Tournament Tripod CT-3442 Rapid and the Mindshift FIRSTLIGHT® 20L backpack.

I have traveled with my tripod, on Southwest, with no problems.
I have also packed it in a suitcase, but that was only for my travel tripod.
