Does anyone have any idea as to what came out of this? I'm assuming some sort of wasp. I have never seen anything like it before. I spotted it on the frame of my Garage door when I went out with the dog this morning.... North Georgia, Atlanta Metro...
Wow!! Neither have I, can't wait for an expert to ID.
(a chuckle: Google Image Search thought possibly an armadillo

It looks woven (aviary) versus regurgitated (wasp).
I'd recommend you count your children EVERY morning to make certain they're all still "there!" [THIS is a joke!]
I used to have major-sized wasp nests around the eves of my house; and, I worked out an arrangement with them: ALL nests should be at least three feet away from any doors an windows. And, it worked! For over eight years, the guests at my B&B were NOT bothered by mosquitos; or, other flying pests! Wasps (and, yellow-jackets) are the absolute BEST at keeping mosquitos, gnats, etc AWAY from your home! And, when we ate outdoors, I ALWAYS set a plate of food about 20 feet away from my guests' table. . .And, the yellow-jackets NEVER bothered the humans. . .because they had their own table setup.
I am NOT joking. . .It works!

Search on the internet shows that it could be any kind of wasp. Paper wasp usually build a honeycomb thin paper type nest that's open on the bottom but they can build this enclosed one, as hornets and other wasps can do.
Her is a photo from alamy.com.
Could be a bald faced hornet. It is the start of a vespid wasp nest. Baldface are one of many vespids.
Only one to a few now, hundreds and basketball size if allowed.
With a spray bottle that will squirt a stream, mix 50/50 alcohol and water and add a squirt of dishsoap.
Soak nest well.

If so, have it professionally removed. They are nasty critters. Even if it is currently unoccupied, they'll be back.
Well, I went to take it down and found a dead Bald Faced Hornet on the ground under the nest. Looks as though it's wings never formed properly. Went to knock the nest down and another one came out. Looks like I'll have to spray some wasp killer spray first...
How big is that nest? I've watched a few bald faced hornet next removals on Youtube & you don't want to take them lightly. Spraying is likely to make them very angry. Look at a couple of those videos to get an idea what you might be in for.
Dangerous little critters.
No, doesn't look anything like it!

Thing is, that’s what came out of it when I went to take it down. Granted, it’s just the start of one

I would like to repeat. A toxic bug spray is not needed. The nest is small, few individuals. Soap and water and alcohol are instant poison to them but not to us. I bath in soap and water, and am ok. Try that with pesticides.
All in the interest of safety. Yours. I use soap etc. See sippyjug comments on this subject elsewhere.
