The red plant - are the color elements flowers or leaves? I've not seen anything like it in the Sonoran Desert.
The red flowers are from the Ocotillo Plant. Most of the time it looks like a cluster of greenish gray dead sticks with long thorns. When it rains, or in this case, is watered the sticks become covered with little bright green leaves in just a couple of days. A week without water the leaves dry up and drop off. The red flowers seem to come and go without rhyme or reason. If you go through an Ocotillo forest you can almost always find one or two in bloom.

Red, white and blue.
Red plants, blue sky and white flower are colors that are mirrored in the flag. You put this together nicely. It works for me.
