Has anyone investigated using the Microsoft Surface Studio 2, it is a beast and looks like it may be the runner up to a Mac at a lower price point.

That's pretty expensive! What is your need for a "beast"? I am not a Mac fan. Parts of my PC are 11 years old, parts are 2 years old. My MB and processor (i7) are 7 years old, ...
It continues to do everything I need. I run 5 - 6 image processing programs. I currently have 32 GB RAM, 3 internal drives, including a 1 TB SSD for OS and two sata disk drives for data.

I do not mean to be critical of your post, just curious.
Thanks,
Mark

If you get the Surface studio 2 you would use the Surface screen and you need to decide if it's good and how you calibrate it.

The Surface Studio 2 is a desktop and not laptop.

It's a direct competitor to an iMac. And like your average iMac, there is nothing beastly about it. Given it's graphic engine and wide gamut color space, it seems eminently well-suited for video production, but not a beastly choice for photo editing. Put in a 6 or 8 core cpu and an Nvidia Quadro card that supports Adobe RGB and now you're talking. I would opt for a less expensive tower and display than to have the whole thing in one box that is probably not upgradeable. You can do better and spend less with a less-mac-like solution.

It is upgradable all the components are in the base, and I do agree the Mac is a less costly option and well suited for photo editing the new Mac 27” is 2300 and the Surface is 3400 what impressed me about the Surface is the ability to use the pen for photo editing rather than a Wacom or a mouse but I do believe it is over priced.
