My Canon has built in GPS and the update period can be configured in the menu system. I don’t find it to be a battery drainer at all. I usually set it up to update every 15 minutes...but you can do more frequently if you want super precision when moving around rapidly I suppose.

I own the GP E2 and definitely agree with the price being borderline astronomical. This add on accessories uses one AA battery and last a VERY long time before a replacement is required. The cost of it negates many to purchase this device.

Prior to my purchase, I used a phone app called GeoTag. It requires the merging with a Windows/Mac machine but the cost is minimal comparatively. The app is made for android and apple.

It's not 100% totally accurate. It uses cell tower triangulation instead of satellite but the cost and the absence of monopolizing your hot shoe is a blessing.

Built in GPS are major battery consumers but the energy draw can be reduced depending on how the device is configured.

FWIW- The GP E2 from my experience has worked flawlessly without issues for 4 years. My only complaint was the initial purchase price. It shouldn't be priced above $100.00.

Thanks for manual page. I have a concern more for device operation, compatibility, cost, etc.

I also have a large concern for Canon feeding GPS info and tagged pictures to Google on the sly, for its use but minus compensation to the photographer. I must decline to participate in the Google business model riding on the unpaid use of the work of others.

So the software must exclude any Google association with it.

so you don’t have a ‘droid phone?

I had a GPS device once before. The software for it would tag my photos but then send them to Google for its use without compensation to me the photographer. I discovered weasel words to that effect in the fine print. That's the issue. I do not want Google to receive my photographs for the furtherance of its business model using my product.

If you have a cell phone or a computer you are more likely to be hacked than Canon wasting time on you and your camera.

They have a used Canon GP-E2 for $104.00 at MPB

The single AA battery lasts a very long time. I use rechargables. According to the manual a single alkaline AA will last approximately 92 hours worth of operation set at 5 minute intervals.

My only complaint is the hotshoe is compromised in use.

Easily resolved with a Dual Hot Shoe Mount Adapter.

Thanks, for some that will do that trick. You could also put the GPS in logging mode and put it in your pocket and have Canon's software attach accordingly. I just prefer minimizing clutter and the extra steps. Appreciate it :)

Agreed. There is only so much you can attach before it becomes unmanageable. This particularly applies to the tripod mount. Some accessories are just absurd. They may be OK ia a studio environment but not hand held in the field.
