They always say... don't show up to a gun fight with a pocket knife.

The perfect camera for what you describe, and so many cases like that where you can't bring the big guns, and especially if you want to be unnoticed and silent, is the Fuji x100F.

I only mention it for those who read this post, and want a solution. Check out the youtube and be amazed.

A solution for what question?

It is not the camera never is, never was, never will be. The camera only makes it easier or harder to get the shot depending on the 'bells and whistles' the camera has. The only important thing is the lens that projects the image on the media, film or sensor, and the method of ensuring the lens is and remains the correct distance from the media. All else is gravy.

I don't mean to say the camera is not important, it is. The camera provides all sorts of methods to get the image easier and surer. Put an $80.00 lens on a D850 and a $2000 lens on a D7200 and check the difference.

Yes, the camera does matter, but not as much as the photographer. I still say if you want to take better pictures, then $ & effort invested in the photographers knowledge, skills and abilities pay's greater dividends than $ spent on equipment.

If you bring an arsenal of weapons but, then you return home with nothing to show for you efforts because of the bulk and weight became an issue ... the question is the question.

Some claim they are going mirror-less to save weight, but nine times out of ten it will be something like a $4000 Sony that requires 9 different lenses or an special adapters so they can use their Canon 600mm telephoto and ten other lenses that weigh more than the camera body itself.

Simple has been proven in the past, and practiced by most street photographers. Learning to frame and walk about with a fixed lens is a lost art.

The x100f is a solution if you find yourself buried in gear, and not getting shots. It is the worlds best run and gun camera ever in my opinion...

I carry a Leica DX 6 with me when I can't carry the big Nikons and it takes wonderful shots.

Waaaaaaaaay more times than I've
said, "Damn, If I just had my uke."

And yes I have ukes, U-Bass ukes.

But then, sometimes, I have neither
U-bass nor P-bass, but I do happen
to have my trusty Lumix :-)

You'll hafta take my word that she
sounds even better than this image
suggests. OTOH, no, don't take just
MY word for it. She's touring with
Maceo Parker. Maceo KNOWS, and
dammit, it SHOWS !

Before I got my cellphone I used to carry around a little Canon Elph pocket camera.
My phone camera is hard for my old hands to use and I am going to go back to a small pocket camera, probably an Elph 360 which can be had for under $200.00.

If you're going to a Canon Powershot Elph don't get the 360.... compare and get the Elph 330. So much better as many reviewers have shared. I love it so much I have purchased three just so I have backups if one goes south. All are performing admirably and have 10X zoom. I carry one in the car at all times and can't believe the shots I get with the Elph 330 HS. I have a Canon 70D DSLR, Canon G15, Lumix zs50, Canon SX50 and the Elph 330s and those Elph cameras have been life savers while away from home. I purchased my first one refurbished from Canon but got the next two on eBay for right at $100 with original box and all accessories .... near mint condition .

I spent the weekend on Altoona, PA at a ukulele event. Being the over-packer that I am, I wound up bringing five cameras, from the D750 to a tiny Sony WX9. Since I was carrying one or two ukes, a music stand, and probably something else, I chose to carry the little Sony in a belt case. The WX9 is a traditional point & shoot. I didn't want to use the flash, so most of the shots were "forgettable." I knew there was an excellent photographer shooting the event with his Fuji X-T2, so I wasn't concerned.

Jerry, we all know camera does matter and a point-n-shoot can't compare to a DSLR for example, but don't put down such use based on your "experiment" using an 8 year old camera. Technology has given some compact cameras new life and respect.

Absolutely. I won't even mention
how many I have, primarily cuz I
really have no idea how many ...
Sorta like the angels that dance
on the head of a pin.
