I, too, own multiple bags for for different scenarios. Although it has never happened to me before (yes I have stuffed my vest to the gills to meet the restrictions), I have just been informed that all in-country airlines in Brazil are now, not only measuring your carry on bags, but also weighing them. When deciding on a bag make sure it fits the size and weight restrictions for your chosen mode of travel. Fortunately my husband is not a photographer and he can carry my extra lenses and bodies.
I have not yet resorted to using my spouse to carry my carry on leftovers.
I agree with a few of the others......I have different bags for different things. On the motorcycle (small shoulder bag with 1 frame and 2 lenses). Sight seeing/traveling (Carry on wheeled case that also transforms into a backpack. Holds 2 bodies, 4-5 lenses, 17" laptop). Paid gigs (large wheeled hard case, large enough to hold everything I may need)
He loves the perks that come with the "job". Exotic locations, luxury hotels, flying first class and having fun.
As he often tells people "I am the wind beneath her seat cushion". He always makes me smile.

I recommend the Pelican case. I have had the 1510 for several years and I'm very happy with it. A bit pricey but I'm convinced it's worth it. You ususally get what you pay for.
Do your research and figure out what's best for you and your circumstances.
LowePro makes a bag with wheels that has a telescoping upper handle to push/pull the bag ( airports, etc.) , but the bag also has hidden shoulder straps so that you could carry it that way. The bag has the usual inside dividers for lenses, camera, etc. I don't have it because the shoulder straps did not fit my body well, but it is well made . Only really useful for transporting equipment to a location, but you will need a smaller bag ( shoulder, backpack, sling)for daily use. You should take advice above and find a shop that stocks them to find out how it fits you.
Since you are looking at both shoulder carry and backpack, you may also want to look at sling bags which are sort of a hybrid.
You will still have to consider all the previously mentioned factors.
