I am not sure what you are asking, but I think that I was saying that the 500 is just too big for a nature walk, a bit uncomfortable to shoot handheld. The 300 with the 2X gives a 600mm f/5.6 that is still sharp and is easily handheld, the 500 really wants to be on a tripod with a gimbal. The 300 is without a doubt the sharper of the two lenses but tele extenders do impair the IQ, I have not yet done comparison shooting of the 300 with the 2X vs the 500 by itself or the 1.4X extender.... I have time but like I said, a 500mm lens is a big piece of glass and very imbalanced on the camera. The image below is the 500 with an extender. It is too much lens to take on a walk.

I concur, the 500F4 v1 isn't really hand held material It's better mated to a tripod and gimbal. That lens is over 8 lbs. They have some weight saving with newer versions but from my own experience, the v1 500F4 is a real handful.

It's not just the weight, but that the weight is at the front of the lens making it very unbalanced, the 300 is much shorter allowing for a much better shooting experience, with the 1.4X extender on the 5DSR you can do some pretty tight cropping and I think that will probably be my preferred setup, I'll probably use the 500 and 2X for those shots that are otherwise out of reach at the dump where I have seen as many as 40 eagles in a single day during winter months, but they don't allow you to get very close.

Before buying this lens I did a bit of research on it, it is said by many that it is Canon's sharpest lens. I know that Regis who has owned many of Canon's long white primes had moved to this lens, after talking to him I went ahead and made the purchase. As far as the claim that it is Canon's sharpest lens? I don't doubt that may be true but it is also a pretty short lens for birding and nature so extenders will almost have to be used in many situations. I have been told that even with a 2X extender this lens is sharper than the Canon 600mm, I am not sure that I believe that to be true but I do believe that with the 2X extender this lens is still quite awesome. I own a 500mm mark I and can share some of the advantages of the 300mm lens vs the 500mm lens. Even with the 2X extender attached the 300 is much lighter and more balanced than my 500mm on the camera, while it is true that the 500 can be shot handheld it is a lot of work and not something that most would want to do for any extended period of time, the 300 however is not much different than using the Canon 100-400, a bit heavier but nothing like the 500mm. With a f/2.8 max aperture and Canon's updated focusing system this lens is quick to focus and is spot on.

As far as IQ, below please find an image of a Cardinal the first image is the image that the second image is cropped out of. You can see that even at distance where the subject is presented very small in the image that the amount you can crop is only limited by the sensor, the lens will out perform many of the sensors of the cameras to which it is mounted, this image came from a 5DSR, I am certain that the lens will out resolve the sensor on my 5DIV.

Congratulations to that awesome lens, it is indeed one of Canon's sharpest lenses (according to Canon, the 400/2.8 and the 200/2.0 surpass it in sharpness, along with the 135mm T/S macro lens).

200 f2, huh, S? … Whatever will they think of, next - I wonder? …. Hmmmm!!!

And the 135mm T/S Macro, huh? … Is that one ultra-fast, too?

These are all L lenses, I assume - right, S?

BTW, S … where do you find this "according to Canon" stuff? … It CAN'T be on the website, as then, they would be undercutting all other lenses - wouldn't they?

For a lot of great information on Canon lenses see the Canon book "EF Lens Work III"
My copy (first edition) was published in March 2003.
It is now up to the 13th edition.

Ooooh, I say, Richard … how neat!!!!

Do you have a link to it, too?

Or - at least - a place on the Net - where I can read up about this book?

Thanks, in advance, my good friend …

The 400/2.8 is what I was looking at but I could not afford the newer version, I am not so sure that it would be practical for a walk around anyway. DXO actually has the 300 as being the sharpest lens by a significant margin, but I also understand that they have their test results and others may have theirs.

Why not try some bird photography?
You have enough gear to get started, especially for static birds.
The skills you will learn can be very helpful with other photography genres.
However keep in mind it can become addictive and may start a quest for very long lenses.

Actually, Richard - I've already done quite a bit of bird photography. My best stuff, though, is mostly - ducks, swans and Canadian Geese - the ones who stay close to the ground and don't fly much. I also have a whole bunch, taken of flying birds - but, most of them take off when I get too close. For a while, I'd been thinking of putting a group of them, together … and calling them - "The Ones Who Got Away" …

You know, Richard - the longest lens I ever had, was that Tokina 80-400 AT-X - but, I sold it, as I got so disillusioned with it, as it appeared I could never hold it steady enough, and I didn't want to have to lug around a tripod with me, everywhere. Currently, the longest lenses I have (3) top out at 300mm - which, I've always considered - isn't REALLY long enough for decent Bird Photos - but, the OP's work here - puts THAT theory to the lie - doesn't it? … But, of course - he's using one of the best lenses Canon's EVER produced, along with the one camera they've made so far, with MAX RES (51MP!!!) So, I don't feel so bad!
