Take it from a man who made good additional income making leather goods from belts to saddles, for a camera strap, leather is a poor choice. Straps made from material will be more comfortable (they adjust to your bumps and valleys) and tend to slip far less.

But there is a reason for using leather right? If not you wouldn't make any money.

If you had asked me 15 or so years ago when leather work was still a source of income, I wouldn't have thought about suitability at all. I'd have figured you were a grown man and knew what you wanted. Here on a photography forum the OP asked and got from me an honest response.

You make an excellent point. Leather, while great looking, is not as flexible as fabric, and I do not think it would have the long term strength to hold a camera unless it was thick, then it's be uncomfortable.

Consider a leather guitar strap. They are specifically designed to withstand the heavy weight of a guitar, and are plenty wide enough for comfort. To adapt a guitar strap for use on a camera, all you need to do is fasten appropriate lug rings onto the ends of the strap. That's what I did... works great.

Properly padded, leather straps are as comfortable as any, and more durable than most. I have several more than 50 years old still in good condition. Every few years I apply a bit of mink oil to keep them supple. You should find what you need in the second link provided by MT Shooter.
