I watched the departure via Trains Magazine/Facebook.
And learned a valuable lesson re video recording. "LOCK YOUR FOCUS"
The focus kept going in and out. I finally saw what was happening, when ever the steam drifted in or out off the focus point, focus shifted.

Looking forward to your pictures.
I'm not posting this to be a correction Nazi, but in case people want to Google the event. The two engines are Big Boy 4014 and UP 844, a Northern. I saw some video on Reddit of the two double-headed. Amazing sight.

Terrific! Is 4014 under its own power?

Well, the day is done. I met several interesting people, including a tour bus of German nationals.
The train was running late allowing me to get ahead of it. 3 stops to take pictures, only 1 stop was good. I have a couple hundred pictures to process tonight.
1st stop I ended up on the wrong side of the tracks when an east bound freight came through just ahead of 4014. Zero pictures.
2nd stop was good, 3rd is ok but power lines are in the way.
Next stop is Ogden tomorrow morning. More cool trains there in a permanent UP display.

Frankly Sir, I envy you!
I look forward to seeing some of the pictures.
FWIW I lived in the Cheyenne area in the '90s when the 3985 Challenger was running. You'd think in that area of wide open spaces you'd always be able to get your shot. Nope

At the first set-up everyone turned to watch the approaching east bound freight. These are long trains with three locomotives on front then 100 cars back a fourth locomotive with 80 cars hooked to it. It was still rumbling past when 4014 appeared, or it's smoke appeared.
Things went better at the second set-up, we were all on the right side of the tracks and had plenty warning that the train was coming. As it turned out I had positioned myself too close to the track to catch the train as it passed by. Though I didn't know it at the time, I was having an issue with focus. Shooting in P mode, but some shutter speeds were way too low.
Third set-up was on the edge of town at Rock Springs. Located much farther from the tracks, but power lines were in the way. I will have to remove them later.
There are many more pictures to share. The motel wi-fi is bog slow, taking 3/4 tries to upload each picture.
More later when I have a better connection.

Forth set-up was the static display in Rock Springs

But you were having fun!
The forth is a nice shot.
The front engine of the 4014 is the one that the rod packing hasn't seated yet and the 'shinny' parts are showing the results of the blow by
Nice series with quite a few challenges. Thanks for sharing.
