Affinity Photo Editor Question

In Lightroom I edit my RAW photo and then export it to Photoshop 2019 as a .jpeg file. The original Lightroom RAW file data is maintained. I then use Photoshop 2019 to further edit the exported .jpeg file as needed.

Does Affinity Photo provide the capability to edit the RAW file and then export or save the file as an .jpeg? Then do further editing to the .jpeg file in Affinity Photo?

Hope this makes sense and that I am asking my question in the correct manner.

Thanks,
Vaughan K.

Yes to Question #1. Don’t know to Question #2 - but I’m sure the Affinity instructions can sort that out in a heartbeat. RTFM!!!!

If I understand the question correctly, yes... you can make edits to jpeg files (and many other file formats) in Affinity Photo

And the other poster is also correct on question 1

Affinity has some very good non-destructive editing capabilities

I believe by default Affinity exports the data to a PSD file from the raw Develop Persona. Its possible you can change that to a TIFF or JPEG, but I'm not sure. Obviously the final output of Affinity from the other Personas can be a JPEG.

A threat or a promise? When you purchased or downloaded Affinity, it very likely came with instructional videos. Did you keep them? If, so pull them up and watch them. If you threw them away, you probably can download them from Affinity’s website. And watch them. They will provide answers to both of your questions. Wasn’t being a “wise ass”, just using common sense to help a brother.

Affinity will process the raw files just like photoshop will. You can export in png. jpeg. tiff. dng.
I like the software and think it’s even easier to learn than photoshop.

Vaughn, I will answer as well as I can but if I'm missing exactly what you want to know, just let me know.

When you open a raw file with Affinity it automatically opens in the Develop Persona. Here you can make the typical adjustments that you would make to a raw file such as adjusting exposure, shadows, highlights, contrast, clarity, saturation, and many more. When you are satisfied with the raw conversion you click on the Develop button. The changes you have made are processed and the file is forwarded (still in Affinity) to the Photo Persona. That is where you further refine you image. There is an extensive assortment of adjustments that can be made in the Photo Persona. Working with layers is another feature of the Photo Persona. If there was an adjustment in the Develop Persona that you feel would be helpful later in the process, you can return the image to Develop with just a click of the Develop Persona icon.

At any point from the Photo Persona you can save the file as an Affinity file with the Afphoto extension. This allows you to reopen the file in Affinity at any time and have full access to all your edits, layers, etc. You and also export your image in any number of formats - png, jpeg, tiff, psd just to name a few.

You end up with your original raw file, an Affinity file and whatever exports files you choose to create.

You can do as you suggest, but if you export the image (originally raw) from Lightroom as a jpeg and further edit in Affinity and again export as a jpeg, you will be throwing away quality. For a start the raw file was 12 or 14 bits, in Lightroom was processed in 16 bits, then when exported as a jpeg became 8 bits with quite a lot discarded. Opening in Affinity and processing the jpeg further is possible but inadvisable.

The correct route to follow is:

Import the raw file into Lightroom and process in the usual way.
Use LR "Edit in" to Affinity Photo (assuming you have set up Affinity as an external editor in Lightroom and set the "round robin" to ) either Photoshop (best) or Tiff,
The image will transfer as a 16 bit file ready for editing in Affinity.
When you are done editing in Affinity, just press "Save" not "Save as" and there is no need to export.
The image will be sent back to Lightroom and will will be available together with the untouched raw file. Any layers you create in Affinity will be preserved in Lightroom but these layers cannot be seen. Lightroom only shows composite images. If later you wish to re-edit the image, just Edit In to Affinity a\nd carry on, all the layers will be available.

If you want a jpeg at any stage, either from Lightroom or Affinity, it is an easy matter to export as such.

This is also how you should be using LR and Photoshop. (I am assuming you have Lightroom Classic, this does not work with the badly named Lightroom (for mobiles).

The Affinity videos do not actually answer the OP's question. As Adobe and Serif are rivals, neither company is very happy to instruct on interfacing each others products.
