Can anyone give me a quick and easy explanation of this software? I have it and would like to know what it does, how it works and how to use it. At first glance it looks like a simple photo editor but I know there is more to it than that.
Please remember you are addressing a relative newbie.
To some extent it is largely a group of preset styles that are processed in camera from which you can save images as jpegs and if I correctly recall, tiff files also. If you also want to do your own post processing from scratch make sure you have the camera to also record in RAW. Those RAW files can then be post processed in Nikon Capture as one would do with other popular programs from other companies. You are correct it is a photo “editor” or post processor.
I just give it a whirl with the various presets such as landscape, etc and save the jpegs to see if you like the program. You can always erase them if it doesn’t please you. Have fun.
I had the Picture Control Utility as a stand alone on my computer for a long time but don't anymore. I believe it can be accessed through View NXi. I never used it but I was under the impression it was for editing Picture Controls or creating new ones. Nikon cameras have a number of native picture controls that are accessed through the menus and they are styles that are applied to the jpeg output from the camera. Examples are vivid, landscape, portrait and a few others.
If you go on NikonUSA, find the software section and search for Picture Controls you will find more details.
I never know what it does although it always got installed with View NX.

It substitutes your computer for the cameras controls. Your computer screen is the Live view

What you are describing is Camera Control Pro 2. It is used for tethering to a laptop or tablet. Picture Control is totally different.
Nikon picture presets, such as: landscape, portrait, standard, vivid are often all you may want. If your camera is d7000 or higher, you may also upload other presets, film simulations, create, save own presets in your camera. NX2 allows you the option to see the results on a big screen, also to change the preset to a different one afterwards if you desire, if shot as RAW. I use it sometimes as a part of my workflow before further modification in other editors ( NX2 is rather basic for editing)

I also like it because it recognizes Active D-Lighting.

The link does give a good example but it's a 3 minute video crammed into 9 minutes. If you can watch at 50 % higher speed then do that.
