Trying to keep focus using a Tele lens 70mm-300mm. Seems I have a focus problem? Should a lesser lens size be better and not have to much camera shake using held option. The camera was on Auto focus, and set at 100 with sunny sky's.

with that lens, your shutter speed should be at least 1/300. Shutter speed should match the zoom on your lens. I.E. a 24-70 lens, shutter speed should be 1/70 min. (for canon, 1/80). etc.

I often use long lens, hand holding SS 2000 or higher.

Looks like too slow a shutter speed! When posting click the store original box so we can see the full size photo to make an evaluation. The general rule of thumb in selecting a shutter speed is to use the reciprocal of the focal length, So if you shot at 300mm you should have a shutter speed of 1/300(if shooting hand held) and not considering any VR.

I do likewise, and I'm often shooting power boat and sailboat races from another moving boat using a Tamron version of the same lens. I would suggest not pushing the lens beyond 250 mm; beyond that I find the focus to be a bit soft.

What mode were you using? auto? Av? tv? Etc! Also check the focus array... single spot in the middle? cluster in the middle? wide area?

Please post the photo again and check the "store original" box. It will retain the metadata.

Sometimes it is best to focus on an object larger than the subject but of equal distance, then lock focus and recompose for the subject.

You were either too close, did not use center spot focusing, or used a very low shutter speed, or all three.

It looks blurred from soft focus, not from camera movement or from subject movement.

1 over the focal length is a rule for full frame, APS-C would be 1/125 for a 70mm focal length.
