You evaluated the person, determined what she needed, and IMHO, provided the perfect response to the question.

I shutter (pun intended) to think what the responses would have been if the question had been asked in the forum.

I think not. It sounds like she will follow your advice. I'm guessing that she may eventually expand her photographic horizons a little more. Eventually, she will come back and ask more questions, at which time she will already be primed and ready to consider buying a camera without even needing any prodding from you...just guidance. Everybody wins.

If he fixed the problem she is happy and will not feel the need to spend any more money.

It was FREE!!! Camera FV-5 Lite (for Android only) and the companion Cinema FV-5 Lite for video.

I use the pro version on my Pixel I. Though since the upgrades to Google's basic camera app (esp Night Sight), I do not use it as much. I may go look at ti again for fun.

I was approached the other day by a lady friend who knows very little about cameras and photography. She lamented that in low light, her smart phone camera blurred, and when shooting performers on stage, it overexposed their faces. She noted that with my camera, I didn't hve those problems. I showed her an app for her smart phone that gives her control of ISO, and shutter speed while in manual, or exposure compensation when in Programmed. She is very happy.

I didn't suggest buying a camera...

You should absolutely feel guilty. Don't know what for, but I was raised Catholic. I was taught to feel guilty for all major world events. I have friends from other religious backgrounds who tell me they also feel guilty, but primarily for personal things usually related to their mothers. So somewhere in there you should feel guilty.

GLAD I"M NOT CATHOLIC.....hahahaaaaaaaaaa

Good for you! She wasn't asking advice about which camera to buy. You pointed her in the right direction.

I believe that you should feel guilty. The poor lady now has ISO, shutter speed control and exposure compensation.
She is happy but I bet confused by all those settings.

Good job. You answered the question she asked.

Too many people think they are sales reps for Sony (or Nikon or Canon or whatever), and forget to mention that (in many circumstances) cell phones can take really good pictures,

Nope. I believe you solved her problem in a good way. If she wanted a real camera so to speak, with your phone is a camera is a camera, I should say if she wanted a standalone camera then she would have one. For some people their cell phone works just fine for taking shots for memory and sharing.

Rather, you should be proud of yourself. You did not try to turn her into another you, or chide her for her shooting with a phone. You met her need, improved her life, and didn't charge her a cent.

I think you did the practical thing. DSLR devotees can think about expanding their creativity into the smartphone field.

So, how many (Jewish, WASP, Presbyterian, <enter your favorite mom group>....) mothers does it take to screw in a light bulb?.... None. "It's OK I'll just sit here in the dark. My children never come to see me anyway (sob sob). What do I need light for? (cry cry)"
