The Canon 28-135 is my walk about and the lens that mostly stays on my T3i.

I'm a stodgy old crank. I would like to buy a 28-135mm lens. However, I can only find it on E-Bay or Amazon. Does anyone know why Canon discontinued this lens in favor of the 24-70mm lens? Has anyone used the two lenses and found one better than the other aside from its f/stop?

The Canon 24-105mm L lens is a GREAT lens!

If my memory serves me, I had that lens in the '90's for my film EOS SLR's it was (among?) the first IS lenses they sold. I liked the results but HATED that the IS had a jumpy view in the viewfinder.

The more recent Dslr versions are EF-S 18-135 or so, to accommodate the APS-C bodies. I believe that the version II is one of their better selling and performing STM lenses. I did find the 28-135 listed on the CanonUSA website with no notice of discontinuance but didn't try to purchase it.

Good observation. The lens does seem to still be an active lens and for sale new : https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/lenses/ef/standard-zoom/ef-28-135mm-f-3-5-5-6-is-usm

Note the $479 new price !! There's a lot of better lenses you can buy for $500. I had an 28-135 IS for maybe 6-months to a year. I have some good pictures from it even for such a short time. If I remember correctly, I bought it used for $100 and sold it for $150. That's the price range you should be looking for when searching for this lens.

I have one and have been told by my local camera store that the lens is rare and discontinued. I have used both and the 28-135 is 3.5-5.6 I think. The only 24-70 I have used is the 2.8. The former is more versatile outdoors in adequate light but bad in lower light. Whereas the 24-70 2.8 is good for shade and lower light. I supplement it with a 70-200 2.8. But the 70-200 gives me camera shake even at high shutter speeds and using IS especially at the 200 range, which gives the best Bokeh. I’m going to start using the 85 I think it’s a 1.7 or 1.4, I can’t remember, for portraits and see how that works.

Good luck in your search.

You can buy a new one on ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EF-28-135mm-f-3-5-5-6-IS-USM-Lens/163135560865?epid=99760288&hash=item25fba31ca1%3Ag%3AcWoAAOSwmBhaCh7W&LH_ItemCondition=1000

I had the 28-135. Used it for years with a 40D. I recently purchased an 80D and gave up the 28-135 for the newer 18-135 USM. I'm n o expert on these things, but the 18-135 is a really nice lens. Focuses silently and is as good as the 28-135 I had. And gives me a bit more on the low end.

I have not used the 28-135, but I have used the 18-135 IS STM a great deal, and I can say it does a pretty nice job.
If I remember rightly, its reviews are a little better than the 28-135. I also used to own the 18-135 IS. I felt it was slightly better than the 18-135 IS STM, even though older.

None is these lenses compare favorably to a Canon L lens of any type, but they do cost less and perform
adequately. I was very pleased with the quality of photos my 18-135 produced, until I got an 70-200L, f4. It is very noticeably sharper. Yet I took many many decent pictures with the 18-135.

I have that lens and love it. Like another poster wrote, it is a largely underrated lens. Mine is sharp as a tack and had served me well.

What do you mean when you say, "active catalog"?

Too bad Canon doesn't make the 18-135 for a full frame body. It's a fine lens. Use it for most all situations.

If they did it would likely be a lot bigger, a lot heavier and much much more expensive. 18mm on a full frame is in the ultra wide range. For an ultra wide to go to 135 mm, would be a massive undertaking even for a slow lense, and adding IS would increase the size, weight and cost even more.

The OP is asking about a full-frame lens, likely for their full-frame body ... a detail that has eluded a few of the respondents

I understood what was being asked. Did I miss something? The 28 to 28-135 is a full frame lens. To make a full frame lens similar to the design of the crop 18-135 as ravhen wished for would be a major undertaking.

Your analysis of the proposed design of an IS-enabled 18-135 lens for a full-frame body left me unsure.

Revhen said he wished there could be a full frame version of the EFs 18-135. I was just responding to that. He was not the OP by the way.
