The computer will not remain in "sleep" mode - have to use hibernate, & have tried a number of things
to resolve the problem - no luck.

I updated from Win 7 to Win 10 within two weeks of it's issuing. I never let my computer sleep or hibernate. I do set my monitors to "sleep". Personally, I see no reason for a computer to sleep or hibernate. My PC runs 24/7 with an occasional restart.

Maybe this may help find an answer?

Good luck,

Certain motherboards just will not work in sleep mode. You can go crazy trying (I did). Even if you can get them to work for short bursts, they will not sleep reliably for extended periods. Just settle with hibernate and the reliability.

I have this problem also. I can set it for sleep for 10 minutes but if I set it for longer it won't go to sleep. I have not solved this problem yet but have a feeling that something in Windows starts up every few minutes and prevents it from going into sleep mode. Once it is asleep it stays there but it won't go into sleep if something runs as it makes the PC think it is still being operated.
I will solve this eventually when it annoys me enough to make the effort.

If you have windows 7, 8, 10 type cmd in the search box . Then right click on the cmd that appears in the list , then select run as administer . A dos black box will appear ( you may have to click OK to get there ) . Now type powercfg /lastwake
Make sure you leave a space between the G and the / . It should show you what is waking the computer .... It could be many things . If you have another computer in the house that someone is using and your computer is set to wake in the settings under device manager for your network adapter . It will turn right back on or shortly after it goes to sleep . Uncheck the box that says allow this device to wake this computer , You can type device manager in the search box to open device manager . Look for network adapter , click on the little arrow to the left of words , now right click on the each line one at a time , then click on properties and look for the heading power management , click on that tab and uncheck the box that says allow device to wake computer . Do this for each line . Then close device manager . It can also be something plugged into one of your usb ( like a very sensitive mouse ) . You can also turn off the mouse and just use the keyboard to wake the computer . Just follow the same instructions as I wrote for the network adapter , but this time select the the small arrow next to the mice and other pointing devices . These are two things that can cause a computer to come back out of sleep .Tom's Computer Repair

Had the same problem and was able to resolve by not allowing a "magic packet" to wake up the computer.

That happens to me sometime. I put it to sleep, and before I can leave, it wakes up. Hibernate is good.

I put my iMAC to sleep anytime I’m not using it. Ditto with my MacBook Pro. Never had any issues. Just tap any key or the trackpad and the iMAC is instantly ready to go.

Thanks for that. Getting information about a Mac is really helpful when discussing a PC.
Sometimes I think Mac people are pompous, know-it-alls and posts like this don't help dispel those thoughts.

I’m sorry you think I am pompous. Also sorry you are so thin skinned. I was simply making a comparison and a possible solution. It works on a MAC, perhaps it might work on a PC. Didn’t like my comments? Simply ignore them and get a life.

Unfortunately that is not my problem. I am not having my PC come out of sleep mode. It just won't go into sleep mode if the period before going to sleep is set too long.
Normally I like to have it keep running for say a 1/2 hour before going to sleep. If I set it for more than 5-10 minutes it will never go INTO sleep in spite of setting it to do so. So something starts running on the PC about 10-12 minutes which the sleep timer is seeing as activity so it never goes into sleep. This is what I want to find.
Whatever it is it isn't running on my wifes PC. No boxes are ticked under any power management for the network card or USB. I do use WOL on other PCs but they are currently all turned off.
Some of the suggestions here might help those whose PCs are exiting sleep mode prematurely but not mine as I am not even getting into sleep mode. It does act normally if I select say 5 minutes.
Something is calling home and resetting the timer - this is a best guess on my part and so far I have done nothing serious to find out what it is ie it hasn't sufficiently annoyed me yet but I know it will.
