The D700 is an 11-year-old model and half the resolution of the 7-year-old D600. Are you sure you don't mean the D750? If Nikon's special deal on the D750 is too much, a D610 would be better than the D600, which improves the shutter mechanism. The cost of a used/refurbished D610 is not much more than a D600.

A bigger issue than the cost of the camera body in moving from an APS-C sensor to a full-frame sensor is the cost of upgrading lenses, unless you have full-frame lenses already. You might consider a D7200 or D7500 instead.

I have(and love) a D600 but, I have to agree completely with jscorbin. The D750 is a far better value at this point.

The D750 is discounted to $1296 (new) right now. I purchased one from B & H Photo just a couple of months ago at that price. It had gone up to $1496 after that but is back down to $1296. It's superior to the D700 and D600. The D750 has the best autofocus performance of all of those. The D600 was always known for poor low light AF performance. The D750 is far superior in that regard.

D700: Multi-CAM 3500FX (EV range -1 to 19)
D600: Multi-CAM 4800FX (EV range -1 to 19)
D750: Advanced Multi-CAM 3500FX II (EV range -3 to 19 - better low light AF performance)

At only $1300, the D750 is relatively
"future proof".

You can enjoy it a long while as the
best of its genre, and when it's time
to move on from SLRs it will remain
in modest demand due to reputation
of that model. At $1300 you won't
lose a bundle when the time comes,
and til then ... ENJOY !

They are different cameras. The D7100 will be the perfect companion for action and wildlife because of the "digital factor." The D600 most probably will have a better performance in low light. In spite of its age the D700 is still a great tool. Its 12.1 Mp. sensor shares honors with the D3 and both cameras are very capable of awesome enlargements.
The D600, if the mirror mechanism has been replaced by Nikon will offer you a great camera at a reasonable price. The D700 if you find one in good shape will also be a great performer so the decision is yours.
Just keep in mind that going FX will require FX lenses for the camera to shine.

I have a d610 purchased refurb from Adorama. Its a great camera because its FX and yet smaller and lighter than the big Pro models. Despite all the writing about weak AF stuff in the dark, Ive never had this issue nor do I really shoot in the dark, not sure who does. Definitely never showed up with indoor photography. Keep in mind the AF system sensitivity is partially determined by the max F-stop of the lens, so a F1.4 lens gives the AF system 3 stops more range than a F/4 lens.
Biggest advantage of the FX cameras over Dx might be the ability to use old or new MF lenses if you can handle MF.
I think there is a challenge with the narrower depth of field of FX vs DX given the same field of view (35 vs 50mm for example). It makes focusing less error tolerant.
7200 is probably great. Decision depends on the lenses owned or planned.

Compare shots taken with each. You can select up to four cameras and change the ISO.

Recent D7100 sales on eBay. With so little use, it's almost new. How about keeping it?

If the price is an issue, you will not go wrong with a used D610. Excellent Dynamic Range and overall performance. Or spend more for a 700 or 750, both being a step above the D610. The question is: for your needs, is the extra cost of the 700 or 750 required to fulfill your shooting needs. Only you can answer that. In my case, I would love to buy a D850. Probably the best Nikon ever created. However, when I really analyze it objectively, the cost would not be justified for my shooting needs.

While the D700 was a fine camera, in it's time. I don't think it can stand up against a D610 and certainly won't match up against a D750. And it is only available used.

Jim, my previous post about the D610 was not any kind of plug, but I have been downsizing all my DSLR stuff (most recently the Zeiss 85 on here) and next in line is my D610 and 180/2.8. If you're interested in a used D610 with about 9k shutters, let me know. Love the camera but can't justify keeping it since I got a X100F recently. It's too much to carry with little kids hanging off my arms.

I shot the D700 for years until I purchased a D810. The biggest difference I find between the two is that the D810 has facial recognition and I can crop the pictures a lot more. The D700 has done a lot of professional work and is tough as a camera can be. I personally would not trade my D700 for a D610.
