Hello,

I am trying to reset the DPI on my Canon Powershot SX530 to 300DPI.

I checked the manual and it didn't really help.

It just says go to function set and select L.

The camera is already set on L.

The DPI on my photos say 180DPI.

What is the correct procedure to reset?

Thanak you

To shoot the best quality possible with your sx530, just set the camera to:
Image size: Large (page 45 of the user manual) and Compression ratio/image quality: superfine (page 73)

DPI is a printer term, though is now sometimes used interchangeably with PPI. PPI (pixels per inch) relates to the quality of a print at various print sizes, and is a choice you can make in your photo editor as you re-size and/or crop.

Correct procedure?
ANS: ignore. This is not an issue nor a problem, potential nor otherwise.

In digital files, the issue is the total pixel resolution, as expressed by the length and width of the file and measured in pixels. As you probably saw on page 164 of your manual, the camera's large setting is 16MP as in 4608x3456 pixels. DPI - dots per inch - has nothing to do with the pixel resolution of the image files nor does DPI have anything to do with how you can use those files. One of the reasons you can't change this legacy value (like a human's appendix) is that it has no relevance to the digital files the camera creates. Although DPI is expressed in files created from Canon's EOS DSLRs, that default value cannot be changed on these cameras either.

This post provides a number of details, including a more detailed discussion specifically of DPI (scroll down about halfway): Recommended resizing parameters for digital images

I have to submit a photo at 300dpi.

I did look at page 45 already and page 73 of the manual.

When I press the menu it brings up 20 different things come up.

I am not sure where to go from there.

Are you possibly misunderstanding their request / technical specifications?

If this file is to be printed, you want to achieve 300 ppi (pixels per inch). A PPI resolution is achieved by reviewing the pixel size of the image and dividing by 300. Returning the uncropped 'large' files from your SX530, these files would print to 15in x 11in @ 300ppi (4600/300ppi = 15inch and 3400/300ppi = 11inch).

For what purpose are you "submitting" your image files, printing? online display? other?

I'm going to send you a private message so we don't have two conversations going on in this topic. Chg_Canon is addressing your "300 dpi" concern; I'll try to help with camera settings.

Sometimes pics need to be in sizes... like some of the "we'll sell your pics for you" websites want no smaller than 5 or 6 meg.
Nothing to do with actual printing, they simply dont want people submitting photos that wont scale up to whatever size cleanly.
In most cases, the folks submitting the pics would have no idea about pixels or dots or any other puter / printer references.
The camera tells them how big their pictures are, and thats all they care about.
