Brandywine River Museum, Winterthur. Both are within about 20 minutes or less of Longwood. Like Longwood, Winterthur is a former Dupont estate. Very different feel. Brandywine River Museum features the work of the Wyeths. Very nice setting as well.

Winterthur is fabulous in the springtime with blooming azaleas around the grounds.

Nemours Mansion, Hagley Mills, Ashland Covered Bridge, W&W steam train and station, Brandywine Battlefield. We got flowers but we also got history.

You might want to check out Carousel Park & Equestrian Center.
They have a website https://www.nccde.org/425/Carousel-Park-Equestrian-Center

Depending on how much "area" travel you feel like, Valley Forge National Park is a nice place.

Valley Forge is a nice park but nothing much really happened there as far as the war was concerned. Brandywine battle field is much, much closer to Longwood and is historically more relevant.
Maybe a half hour south of Longwood, maybe less depending on traffic, is the Conowingo Dam. A great spot for photographing Bald Eagles and Cormorants and other large birds.

There is way more to Longwood Gardens than the conservatory. You could spend an entire day there and not cover everything Longwood has to see, depending on time of year you visit. Summertime is the best time to visit. All the trails and outdoor facilities are open. Be sure to wear good walking or hiking shoes.

Thought about Brandywine, but I was never there, so I didn't say anything. There is a mill on the creek there, right?

Longwood is on my to do list also. I passed it once on my way home from Conowingo, after making a wrong turn.
