👍👍 Been preaching this and fighting the “privacy paranoia” battle here for years, and during that time, there have been literally dozens of threads like this one. I’ll say it again:

1) cheap <$100 onsumer grade HDs will always fail - just a matter of when and the large mult-TB drives are even more dangerous because you lose more data.
2) double drive failures DO happen.
3) you need 3 copies of your data: working, backup and off-site DR (disaster recovery)
4) if you have decent internet access, you can’t possibly create DR storage as robust as a major cloud provider.
5) all your thousands of $ of camera equipment has one purpose - to produce data - it’s your most valuable commodity. Protect it as comprehensively and carefully as you choose your camera and lenses.

End of rant...

Please, keep "ranting". I'm a retired IT manager, and the value of backups for data recovery is nearly priceless.

We started in the 1970's, well before anyone ever thought of "The Cloud" to safely handle back up tapes and disks of operational data. We started off by using fire-proof vaults, then decided that off-site was by far, the real solution. We rented "fire-proof" vaults off-site, and gladly paid the daily freight to get the data there.

However, a lot of folks don't have a concept of what off-site means. We took it to mean "clean out of Dodge", as in other cities and states. We also saw the advantages in instant backups, especially with transient data.

When your business relies on data, I paraphrase the late Senator Barry Goldwater: "Extremism, in the defense of saving data, is no vice!"

I really did it this time. Many times I thought I had lost my entire photo collection, for one reason or another. (I am not at all comfortable with 'THE CLOUD'.) I back up my files to another drive on a regular basis.
I have been running on a MAC Pro laptop for about 3 years now and keep up with latest system updates, currently running 10.14.4.

I HAD 1.9TB of photos on a 6TB external USB drive, with a 6TB B/U drive.
Last week I walked away one evening, came back a few minutes later to a BLANK drive. No worry, I had my b/u drive to goto. 2 days later, almost the same exact thing happen. Now I am dead in the water.
To make a long story short, I have changed all cables and power supplies. My son took the primary drive home and it came up and worked fine on DOS pc.

I have used that drive on my MAC for several years, but now it does not see it all of a sudden.

HELP..I am looking for any and all ideas that anyone may be able to think of..PLEASE.

I have over 30000 photos at stake here.

I thank you very much for your time and effort on my part.
Have a good day,

I have a triple backup for all my files and image. If something is important I would never rely on a single backup. Lesson learned for going forward. Hope your images can be restored.

Take your computer to the Genius bar and ask for help. I've got another friend with an iMac that the USB ports quit working on too. They had to base line the computer back to original to get them to work again.

I am also uncomfortable with the cloud. mmkay... well, I see that you are using the Internet at the moment: and presuming that at some point you connect your preferred image storage devices to the same computer that you are now using to connect to the Internet, what makes you certain that someone could not go through the image files that are on your device that is connected to your computer?

Once a hacker has gained access to your computer, which is far from impossible, they 'could' control your web cam, log your key strokes, and certainly would be able to access your files. So what makes you think your data is any more safe on your personal hardware than in the cloud?

"The Cloud" is just a server somewhere connected to the internet, and your personal computer is pretty much the same thing. Unless your images contain highly sensitive or illegal material, I don't quite understand the paranoia.

I remember when people were afraid to even buy things off the Internet, seems kinda silly now, but I'm sure there are still people uncomfortable with entering their credit card info into an online shopping cart.

Many cloud storage companies encrypt the data you send for storage, and you go through a secure link (HTTPS:).
I have a couple of Gb of data up there, photos, documents, spread sheets, manuals,... anything I want saved.

...something like a Dropbox account gives you pretty decent security, if that's what you're concerned about. <shrug> I use that and Smugmug (in which I can denote folders as "private" and nobody sees 'em but me...and of course those SM folks that have the time and desire to see and maybe steal my stuff; uhuh, that's gonna happen soon) and, yes, even (shudder) Google Photos. Whatever, sometimes it's easier for me to go into one of these accounts and download one of my pix...and there it is, right in front of me. YMMV

It USED to be in the American English language that an unknown gender was referred to as male.

Is that no longer true???
Did the PC Police change it to "person"?
Did someone change it and not tell us?
Or.... <very snarky remark deleted>.

As a result of this post, I am now backing up to my NAS and two external drives. Thanks for the reminder.

A NAS is not and never has been a miracle safe-storage place. A NAS is just a computer with a hard drive (or multiple drives) that is shared on a network.

On my home NAS, there's the main shared drive, and three USB drives attached which I do USB backups to frequently. It doesn't stop there.
I also backup the NAS contents to more separate drives, two of which are bare drives I keep in my storage shed 150 feet away from the house, where a house fire or power
surge can't touch them.

You can't have "too many" backups, wherever they are.
This is why enterprises still back up servers to tape (among other things), and store tapes off-site. A big corporation,a school district, any business, cannot take chances.
Neither should anyone with years- worth of data or a lifetime of photographs.

I may be kidding myself, but the photos should be backed up to Time Machine. My Mac is set up to do so even though pictures are on an external drive.

The inability to see the pix on your Mac when your son can on his PC may be due to the formatting of the drive. Don't reformat! you will lose all data. This sounds like a job for a pro.
