I Love Micheal's once a year 75% off frames sale. So much better than the buy one get one 50% off. You really can't beat the quality and prices at 75% off. I have over a 150 of the big real wood frames. I get my backing, matts and sleeves out of New York from a wholesaler Shopping for frames and mounting for your photos is always an exciting time. They say / my kids/ I'm OCD. It can take a week to mount, frame and hang everything perfectly symmetrical after a printing.. Hope your not ate up like I am.........

I went to Michaels with a coupon and chose frames and mats in stock. Nothing custom. It’s expensive! Where is the best place to have this done? I’m not framing the Mona Lisa just some nice photos. Comments please 😇

Michaels and Aaron Brothers are the least expensive places to buy ready-made mats and frames.

Aaron Bros occasionally has some really good sales.

The main thing is to make sure you print standard sizes... to avoid custom cut mats and custom made frames. Those are REALLY expensive.

Learn to do the framing yourself, rather than having it done. It's pretty easy with ready-made mats and frames.

I buy from Golden State Art on eBay, they have great service and pretty good pricing on mats, backing boards, and even plastic envelopes if you're interested in selling some of your work locally.

The Michaels I've been in do framing, yes pricey. But a custom shop would likely be more. If you stick to standard stock sizes, learn to do the framing yourself. These days my arthritis is such that I can no longer cut mats. Note, for archivalness, metal or possibly plastic frames are best for photographs. The wood frames have aromatic oils and other chemicals in the wood and finishes that can contaminate the printing paper!

I use standard wall frames from Michael's in 11x14 (for 8x10) 16x20 (for 11x14 and 13x17) and 18x24 for (12x18 and 13x19).
For a 13x17 print I enlarge the opening in a 16x20 with 11x14 window using my inexpensive mat cutting device.
I have also acquired frames from yard sales some of which require some minor repair like painting black.
My wife is an artist (oil on canvas) so most all of our walls are covered with paintings and/or photographs as well as having several in competitions/shows.
Custom framing is not cheap so we do our best with what we can find an repair and have developed quite a collection.

Go to hobby lobby that where I get all my frames for the wedding pictures I do ,you can get mats there and ever thing you need with out braking the bank. If its a oddball size just get a bigger frame an just cut it down it not that hard.

A router, a miter saw, a straight edge and a sharp blade ...
The glass came from a glass shop.

The image is 12 x 18, the frame outside is 23 x 29

You can also use Foamcore and put a variety of hanging devices on the back very inexpensively.

I got tired of the cost as well.
Framed a flag for $800.00.
So I purchased a mat cutter to cut my mats (Takes practice) and haunt yard sales and estate sales for old framed photos and other pictures. Many of those $2.00 framed photos etc. would run $50.00-$100.00 at Michael's. If the mat is in good shape I keep it as well. My attic has quite a few frames to choose from now.

There is a metallic tape made for the job that I use to cover the wood contact areas.

Also, for hanging the photo to mat and hinging mat to backer:

Ask to speak to one of the framers at Michael's and tell them you want to know how to frame your own photos...I did that at my local Michael's and they were so gracious and pointed me in the right direction--which stock frames were the best; which backing to use, etc...I learned a lot from them and now frame my own photos.
