Is there Good News Here? "Canon expects net profit to drop 21% in 2019 amid China slowdown"

The article speaks of reducing estimates for the year due to the slowdown of sales in China and the impact cell phones are having on camera sales.

Is there good news in the article, I believe so. In another division of Canon, when they lost market share to competitors it woke up the technical innovation of the company and they introduced new products that allowed the company to retake it's leadership position. I believe the same thing will happen with the cameras. One of the last lines in the article indicates "Canon said it will launch new products in the digital camera market in a bid to recover sales. Tanaka said sales and profits will pick up in the second half". Those of us that shoot Canon should be optimistic IMHO.

Canon's is now concentrating their energies on more entry level and bottom feeding FF's in my opinion whereas Nikon made a press statement a few years ago they would concentrate more on high end bodies evident in the D500 and D850 which Canon presently has no body to match.

I see Canon's economic strategies to be different and may not appeal to many forum dwellers that demand the highest quality loaded with all the latest features. The relatively new RP is the lowest price FF camera on launch. It's been criticized for it's bare boned features and re-purposed sensor. From an economic standpoint, I think it will be Canon's cash cow in FF and will hook many people into the Canon koolaid. Once people buy into a system, they seldom leave that manufacturer and the more lenses purchased, the harder it is to move in another direction if that is perceived necessary.

I'm just sitting and waiting and haven't bought a single lens or a body for several years now. I'm well equipped but I'd be lying if I didn't say I did not lust for newer tech. Personally the new mirrorless lenses Canon has is way too expensive for my taste. I typically buy ever other model release. Presently I do not see anything interesting made by them and the abandoning of DSLR's and EF mount I've found left a bad taste in my mouth.

I do embrace technology changes. I just don't like the direction it's going with Canon presently. Just call me set in my ways.

More from the same article:

"The camera and office equipment maker said it revised down its global sales plan for interchangeable-lens digital cameras to 4.2 million units from a previously projected 4.7 million".

This indicates to me that the focus will not only be in the entry level point and shoot market, but the upstream DSLR market as well. I just do not see Canon allowing sales in this profitable market to slip away with out responding, especially with Nikon focusing on the area. Canon may not introduce anything new in the DSLR market this year, however 2020 should be full of new products and innovation. Ultimately this will be good for Canon shooters.
