Oh my! High winds yesterday and a scattering of snow this morning - it's April 27 for goodness sake!
Here are a few 2008 shots of equipment on Great Lakes tugs and coastguard vessels operating or mothballed, some at Thunder Bay, one at Port Colborne. I will not betray my ignorance of these things nautical by trying to tell you what they are - fortunately some are obvious!
The last photo is at the "Paterson" Memorial Park in Thunder Bay. It originally memorialised 58 members of "the Paterson Fleet" who lost their lives in WWII, mostly in the Atlantic. It now recognises the sacrifices made by all members of the merchant marine who were lost during the war. I think it should also serve to remind us of the perils of working the Great Lakes, where many mariners have also given their lives over the centuries.
A bronze plaque carries the chorus lines from Rudyard Kipling's "Recessional", a poem written for Queen Victoria's Jubilee; also a phrase from Psalm 107
"Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!"
Recessional
"so He bringeth them unto their desired haven." (King James version)
Psalm 107

Note: I adjusted brightness and contrast quite heavily on the tablet to make it more legible
