My Lumix FX70 disappeared last year somewhere between Tucson and Albuquerque. Sad.

I have a couple of upcoming trips, the most fun one being to parts of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, and to St. Petersburg Russia.

So, I need a smallish camera that will work with this upcoming cities trip but also be good for shooting birds, flowers, plants, landscapes. Budget is under $1500.

Looked at the current Lumix FX series, a Nikon COOLPIX P1000 Digital Camera Deluxe Kit, and a compact Leica V-LUX (Typ 114) Digital Camera. (And MANY others!)

History, I started out with a Minolta many, many years ago, upgraded to a regular Nikon multilens favorite camera, then a Canon digital, then the Lumix about 3 years ago. I love Nikon optics, but can I afford a Nikon digital (even fixed lens) that will work for this trip but also my week-in, week-out photography needs.

We will be traveling in some very small planes during parts of the trip.

Hints? Suggestions?

Thanks, Kathy

Here is an image from my Fuji X100F that I recommended earlier. It is listed at $1200 and worth every penny.

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions and comments!

I'm going to ask my husband for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV. There is a significant birthday coming up and I hope he doesn't gag on the price.

I would love one of the Nikons, but just too heavy for travel.

Fuji XT 3 or smaller XT 30.
All controls on top. The 16-55 lens will work but you will need longer for the birds.

Kathy, Just get the same Lumix. Save you time in learning the camera, etc, and you will be ready to go from day 1. My 2 cents. Welcome to the forum.

To save a lot of time, get the Kindle edition of

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Friedman+Sony+RX10M4&i=stripbooks&ref=nb_sb_noss

A version of the Kindle will play on a PC if you don't have a Kindle. He gives the settings for any situation you'll encounter, and how to assign your most used ones to a button.

Also, an inexpensive power pack,
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Power+pack&i=electronics&ref=nb_sb_noss
With it your pocket on a 2' - 3' USB cable you can shoot all day and not worry about running out of battery.

Enjoy!

You may want to look at the Sony a6000...B&H has it with 2 lenses for $648.00

Sony a6000 nice camera for the price. No image stabilization and I need much telephoto as I can get.
Thanks!

I do note that the "deluxed" lens at B&H looks like a great telephone. But the extra bulk and weight will be an issue on trips.
Thanks again!

Not sure what the "deluxed" lens is, but the standard kit lenses that come with the A6000 are the 16-50 and the 55-210, both of which are decent lenses, but not outstanding. However, both of those lenses have image stabilization/vibration reduction, whatever you want to call it. Sony calls it OSS--Optical Stabilization System. In fact, I believe all the Sony E-mount lenses have that built into them. You only have to worry about lack of VR if you use non-native lenses. A long zoom lens like one of the 150-600 lenses comes to mind, and with those you're best off using a tripod anyway.

Thanks for the clarification, and sorry for the autocorrect typos. Should be "delux" and "telephoto."
The bulk of a physical long lens is an issue. My husband and I are traveling as light as we can these days.
I will bring a unipod at least. This is not a cruise, but a trip my husband has put together with many modes of transportation.

Here's a suggestion regarding the A6000. While the 55-210 is a fairly compact lens, it is lightweight. However the image quality is just "pretty good.". The problem with that lens is that its fairly long to begin with, at 55mm at the short lens. Consider the A6000 with the Sony 18-135 zoom lens. It's a very good lens and the focal length should suffice for most situation. If you need more reach, using the clear image zoom feature will get you an effective reach of 270mm without losing IQ. The lens is compact and light, and performs well. And you wouldn't have to switch out lenses.

But if you need a superzoom, then consider even the Sony RX10VI with the 1" type sensor or the Lumix FZ300 with the smaller sensor. Both reach out to 600mm and each has its own version of clear image zoom.

Sounds like a Baltic cruise? I took one last summer and instead of lugging around my Fuji X-T2 with multiple lenses I bought and took a fixed length (35mm FF equivalent) Fuji X100F Camera. Had ZERO regrets. Weighs all of 17 oz. and fits in a large pocket.

Have fun!

I wish more people knew the benefits of a fixed lens, leaf shutter camera like the Fuji X100F. The best photographers in the world have these... and its not based on price.
