I have a Sony. It has an HDR setting on it. I found out reading the manual, that it will only shoot HDR in JPEG! It will NOT let me use the HDR setting in RAW. FYI. Canon may be different.

You are talking about having HDR processing occur in the camera, not on the computer. Sony may require JPEGs for that, where others may not. But HDR can be in any format (JPEG, TIFF or RAW) if you shoot several shots with different exposures and use software in your computer to do the HDR processing.

Some earlier posts in this thread gave the best advice for getting up to speed using HDR -- they gave links to good references to study. HDR is an amazing tool, but just cooking a photo so that the weird colors remind one of HDR isn't true HDR, however good and artistic the results might be. As far as computer hardware goes, I'm eagerly awaiting a time when software, graphics cards, monitors, etc., are significantly upgraded to provide wider color gamut in addition to the recent improvements in resolution. That would serve us much better in all aspects of photography and let some really mind-blowing HDR happen.

Aobe.com, download photoshop cs5, cs6 or whatever. You get a free 30 day trial. You also get with that is Bridge. You can open raw photos in bridge and it's also a good place to arrange your photos and view them. When that is all done, you can download Photomax, it's a trial as well an see if that is what you are looking for. Good luck and happy shooting...

Simple call the Canon Help Desk:

1-800-828-4040

They will walk you through the down load process.

I have used them many times and they have never failed me yet!

Hey thanks for responding! . You know what the problem is? My notebook/laptop does not have a drive to insert a disk into, so I tried to download the software from the canon website and it didn't work. I hope someone has some ideas too. I feel like I keep hitting a dead end! :(

The Canon DPP program is on your disk or available for download from Canon. It's a pretty good program. I use it all the time and I have Photoshop and Lightroom. It's a small program that processes your raw files. It works great on both my XP and windows 7 machines.
If your computer won't download it then go to a library or get a friend to download it to a flash drive.
What computer are you using?

I'm thinking a lot of us missed the post where alesner said his computer doesn't have a drive. I'm wondering if maybe he has a "netbook" (which is sometimes called a notebook), since they are not normally equipped with an optical drive. If that's the case, there may also be hard drive storage limitations since they rarely have large drive storage available, and they often have 1 gig of ram.

If it is a netbook, it should have at least 1 usb port that can accept an external cd/dvd drive/burner. With that he can load the Canon cd, which includes DPP (Digital Photo Professional) which can read and display Canon raw images, do some post processing, and basic HDR directly from the raw files, with the latest version.

If not that, then maybe use a computer at a local library or go to Kino's and copy the dpp file to a flashdrive from either the CD or the internet.

I have a Regel XT and Canon 40D you should have disc that came with your camera and it has adobe reader on that will open up raw and jpg. It also has zoombrowser that will show your raw pictures so you can look at them.

for HDR processing I recommend Photomatix Pro. It does a decent job and has lots of options. It's not free, but free to try.

Photomatix pro is HDR software, it costs $100.00 however the trial version is free for life and never runs out, but it does watermark each image automatically, may be worth trying to see what you think.

I just took the time to read all 4 pages of responses. Under Item #2 it appears that you are trying to read a .jpg file with a RAW file reader. I haven't seen anyone mention that a RAW file is profoundly different from a.jpg file in that it contains great quantities of information that the jpg file does not store and that it does not lose any of that information when repeatedly opened and closed.
If you are serious about pursuing this hobby or potential income producer consider getting an up-to-date laptop computer. The wide screen will provide more work room for the photo being worked on and the tool panels. I purchased a REFURBISHED 17" Acer from Walmart last winter for $348.00.
Tiger Direct had the same one for the same price. Add a wireless mouse from Big Lots($10.00)and you are set to go.

Hello friends. Been following but just registered as I spent the whole day yesterday on a problem and have no immediate friends that are interested in photography like I am to help me along in my problem!

So here is my scoop and I am hoping that someone can assist me so I can finally relax -this issue has been driving me crazy!

So 1) I have a brand new Canon EOS 60D and I want to start exploring RAW and HDR photography. How do I read a RAW file on a Windows XP laptop? Through research, I have learned that apparently RAW files canoy be read on Windows XP?

2) The ultimate reason I want to read my RAW file is to use it for a HDR software. I explored Picturenaut and Luminance yesterday and could not get either to turn out anything that resembled a HDR photo. I am guessing it is because I used a JPEG file as opposed to a RAW file? I watched some utube videos on the picturenaut software, I did everything correctly...the only difference was that I was not using a RAW file.

Can anyone offer any assistance with this? I am not very tech savy so please try to speak in laymen's terms! I would appreciate it.

Oh and I tried to download this new Microsoft RAW reader in both Chrome and explorer and I could not get anything to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good free HDR software?

you don't need raw for HDR's. jPEG's work as well.

Jpegs may work just as well, but since they don't contain as much information as a raw file, I would think you'd get a better quality HDR from multiple raw files than you will from multiple jpegs.
