Printing Large

I have been shooting for a good while but am just starting to print/frame and display my work. I have two questions for consideration about printing large size and proportions, for mat and frame, not canvas. Suppose your image is 2x3 proportion like the original file. Do you start with the size of the frame, subtract the amount of mat, allow for space between the mat open edge and the image, and see what is left for the image? Or do you say for example, want the image to be 12/18, add space around the image like 1/2 inch, mat width like 4 inches, so you get an overall mat size of 21/27? I guess the question is whether you want the image or the frame to be a standard dimension. Are their regular sizes that are used for shows? I have been printing 11x16.5 inches and am thinking of going a bit larger.

Standard sizes / ratios are cheaper to purchase in bulk. So, 2x3 ratio images print nice to size 10x15inch, with options for mat and frame bringing the frame size to 16x21. A charcoal wood frame and white(ish) mat in 4x or 8x bulks is useful for many images and hanging spaces. You can crop & print the images to the frame rather than purchasing each frame (w/ mat and glass) for each unique image size.

I rather have the frame standard dimensions, if not, you can always make your own, but that's extra work not really necessary!
