I guess I could just use "/facepalm/" in my posts instead. Text alone in posts does not convey the information that speech inflection and body language would supply when conversing in person. Smilies are one way to partially offset those inadequacies. If you don't like them, don't use them, but don't disparage those of us who find them useful.

That is the point that I was making, though... I didn't understand what yours meant either. I don't judge people for using them, but if there is no generally-known and understood list of meanings, I am not sure what they are worth. I used to use the ascii versions with the ":-)" and suchlike, long before the more graphical versions came along. It *is* important to be able to indicate emotional context when you are communicating purely with text... I sure would like to know what the rabbit and fish relate to, though.

And they now use them on cash register keys in the fast food joints. Those numbers and how to use them confuse the younger workers.

I'm disparaging them not you. If you think they are wonderful....fine. but on certain things I feel the inexorable need to express my opinion. much like my feelings on 600 pound naked ladies. It's an itch that I just HAVE to scratch.

That went out with the registers that were also adding machines/calculators.
Cashier entered prices
Casher hit total
Cashier entered amount of "cash" tendered Remember cash?
Register automatically calculated change - if it said $5.45 change cashier just takes that amount out of cash drawer and hands it over. If change involved multiple bills they are either counted out as handed to customer or "fanned" so the customer could see them all.

What I am referring to is computerized registers with pictures or name of each menu item on keys instead of numbers. Registers like that have been used - hit picture of "Quarter Pounder", hit key for "combo" - small, medium or large. Register does work, including tax etc. IT people keep prices up to date. Cashier doesn't even have to know how much each item is.
