My suggestion...... Stay on the rim. Walk to the north towards the "campground" just past the road that goes into the valley. Just hang, be patient and work it during the sunset. Move around, get some different angles. If you are lucky, perhaps some of the horses the Navajos let free range will appear in your foreground.

WOW!!!!!! The horse in the foreground really makes this shot special. Awesome! Thanks for posting.

Looking to purchase a motor coach and travel. And maybe wear out my Canon. So I read this thread with much interest. I also appreciate all the input and suggestions from every one. I am now going to print this thread out, and make travel notes in my computer.
Thanks!

Navajo guided tours take you where you can't go by yourself. The 20 mile drive is nice but you'll get alot more from having a guide. I took two tours with Phillips, AM (6:30-10:30 sunrise) and PM (3:30-7:30 sunset). 4 wheel drive is necessary off the beaten path, max of four photogs (I had 1 other in AM, by myself in PM). Cost was $125 each tour. Try to get more time in the park - one night is not nearly enough!!
