Do I have to buy a special pair of glasses, use a magnifying glass or is there some way to make the brushes in the brushes tool box larger so I can see them easier?

The question is not about brush size but the icons for the brushes in the brush panel.

First click on the little arrow next to the brush size, then click on little gear image in that box, then click Large Thumbnail.

Another case of fire, ready, aim on my part. Gotta read more carefully (if I could only see the fine print)

Thanks for the edification!

In Photoshop CS6 just click on the brush in the tool bar and then with the brush inside the image right click and drag the slider to the size you want.

Windows 7 has a built-in magnifier. It's part of the accessibility helps. Look under "control center>personalization>Ease of access center." The magnifier can be turned on there. It can be set to open on startup, or opened manually when you want it. It will open to dock, open on the cursor as a "lens" or open as full screen. All very helpful. Learn the keyboard shortcuts and it's very quick to use.

I think that I may have misunderstood your question. armedal gave you the correct answer.
