True, but the Purple Finch has a square tail. The House finch has a V shaped tail. And the Purple Finch, generally has more extensive red/purple markings.

I love it when people post those "what bird is this" or "what plant is this" and don't mention what part of the world the photo was taken - and when. Birds migrate. There are many different birds in different parts of the US, AND - we have members in Europe, South America, and the Middle East - and then we have Sylvia, who could be ANYWHERE on the planet!

I'd say Purple Finch, not knowing where the shot was taken. Cassin's has a far more restricted range than the Purple or House.

Season is also important for identifying birds. The plumage can vary quite a bit between summer and winter. When I was in NC, the purple finches were not nearly so colorful in winter and the goldfinches were more olive drab than gold.

I was just amazed by the color bc I've never seen one at my feeders. Usually just blue jays cardinals woodpecker oh yeah squirrels chipmunks reckons etc 😄😄
