D7200 metering mode selection

Have a new to me, D7200 that I want to change the metering mode on. I push and hold the metering mode button(top, right side of camera) and then turn the mail command thumb wheel. The metering mode display on the the top right does not change. What am I missing?

You can change in Manual, Aperture, Shutter and Program mode. Thats the M/A/S/P letters on top of your program dial. Make sure your camera is in one of those modes. Also make sure you have woken the camera up by turning the on switch on again if left idle for awhile...
