I think what you're seeing is the texture of the overlay. If you aren't familiar with the use of textures and layer blend modes, it's a fun and addictive means of creating a unique look. Here are two recent topics:

Just as a reminder, don't forget to experiment with Blend IF when doing textures. Double clicking on the active texture layer will bring up the Blend If window. Dragging the black slider to the right in the THIS LAYER box will drop out all the black areas of the textures and keep the white, or you could drag the White slider to the left to drop out the Blacks. Tip: if you hold down the ALT key and click on the slider button it will split it in to 2 slider. This will give you greater control on transitioning the blacks or whites into the layer below. And as always, you can place a mask on that layer and tweak it even further. Also, you don't always have to use the color in a colored texture layer, even when you are working with a colored Base layer. Just change the colored texture layer to Black n White and then use the Blend it. This will give you different tonal values over the colored layer below.

Yep, a touch more contrast in the flowers should sort it out nicely.

Curmudgeon Your image has many things going for it, topic, placement, background, etc., with that being said, I feel you have, as R.G. described, a sort of veil over all that seems to limit the veracity of it. I present the following as only another possible direction. RBorud

Good first try. Think you'll really enjoy working with textures and overlays if you like softness/ethereal feeling. It can be addicting. I agree with the other comments, the subject needs to stand out a bit more from the background.

One other point, and I've not made up my own mind on this yet. I've been told that when I do flowers such as yours with texture/overlays, that giving some indication of a stem or leaf might be prefered.

I'd enjoy other views on this subject. Nice creativity. Bev

I generally prefer a bit of stem to anchor the flower, though I've seen an occasional image that was pleasing without. I looked through a lot of my pics and all are shots from outdoors, pre-texture and pre-composite phases Would be interesting to have a separate discussion on this. Thanks Bev!

This is the direction I would go with this image if it were mine. I like more contrast between the flower and the background, bringing the flower to the center of attention. I too would have tried to add a little stem to the flower.

However, Curmudgeon's image is still outstanding.

I like the effect very much. I would not change it a bit.
