HDR Programs Review

A new public YouTube review from Matt Kloskowski covers the primary HDR programs in their current versions. He uses the same set of bracketed images, compares the processes and covers the tools in each. It takes about 25 minutes to watch on his YouTube channel.

If you enjoy HDR, want a quick comparison or want to learn how to do it, it is a worthwhile video.

Thanks. I apparently left that out!

I like his work. He "co-wrote" my first Lightroom book with Kelby on version 4. I suspect that meant Matt wrote it and Kelby signed it! Now Matt is on his own.

Learning Photoshop has been a slow process for me. So, when it was on sale, I bought his Photoshop video course. It's good and it is (slowly) getting me up and running.

I'd like to see a comparison that focuses on how much diffuse haloing they produce. Even the natural-oriented Lightroom produces diffuse haloing if you crank up contrast or clarity. Reversing that effect adds considerably to the merge workflow. It would be nice if there was a merging software that didn't produce a file that was prone to diffuse haloing.

The video is basically an infomercial for Matt Kloskowski's courses... i.e. a marketing ploy...

fyi: although hdr has a huge learning curve it is pretty much an industry standard for high end rendering work.

Keep in mind that HDR software makes it so easy to totally wreak havoc with an image albeit in highly skilled hands you'll never know it's been used...

Disclaimer: I am not associated with hdrsoft however I've used it commercially for over a half decade...

Food for thought: There is a difference between a toy and a tool... the later requires a considerable investment in mastery... enough said

Sorry you feel that way. I put it up because I enjoyed a quick overview of the choices. I did pay for one of his courses. Best, OK or terrible, I don't know. It certainly has helped me with Photoshop.

I've been using Photomatix for over 8 years. It has been updated a few times and once you have an account the updates seem to be free. The program gives a wide variety of "looks" and each look has a variety of sliders for saturation, tone compression, white clip, black clip, etc. etc. It also has a mode that will process a single exposure.

"Captain Kimo" updates his HDR software recommendations once a year.
This link will take you to his 2019 evaluation with 20 programs
ranking from 5 stars to one star.

Personally, I use Photomatix Pro. At one time it was number one on the list
but has dropped to number 3.

Most of the HDR images I see are "over the top", surrealist, "on LSD" type images.
I prefer more realistic looking images.
I use HDR primarily to solve the problem of high contrast that makes it impossible
to capture a satisfactory image in just one shot.
Part of the "problem" is that our eyes are capable of seeing details
in lighting that is way more contrasty
than what our cameras can handle. HDR helps to solve that problem.

I have had Photomatix for a number of years and several versions. I initially licensed it via a one-time payment for what was advertised as a "lifetime license." When Version 5 came along, I received notice that I was not eligible for that or any future updates.

The company then switched to an annual licensing program, with the annual fee almost as high as the initial license. So I still occasionally use Photomatix 4.7 to process JPEG stacks and LightRoom for my rare raw HDR efforts.
