If you are shooting birds in trees or birds in flight or sky photography , you will need the camera pivot point OVER your head to be comfortable standing.......

I have never understood people potentially holding up thousands in gear with a couple hundred dollar tripod and head. That of course is not to say all risk can be mitigated at any price...

That's a very good point! I'm not looking for "cheap", but best value for the dollar.

There are some very GOOD seemingly "cheap" tripods out there - IF - you know where and what to look for ! - these make the best value for the $

You can get some very good deals on Gitzo and RRS gear on eBay if you know what you want and what things are worth. Plus a little patience. Unlike Alan I use my pano gimbal even with my 24-70...

My answer to him is that I have been shooting with that rig for years with no issues whatsoever, why spend money unnecessarily. 1" alloy tube construction, solid joint and leg attachment, well built, and a carbon fiber gimbal all done for about $400.

I haven't read all the comments, so I apologize if this is redundant. Check out Steve Perry's video on balancing a gimbal head with a long lens. I did this with my 150-500 Tamron G2 and it made a world of difference when using the lens.

Same with RRS tripods easy to change it out or in. RRS has some good information on selecting a tripod on their website too. You may also want to look into a leveling base, easier and faster than leveling with the legs.

I really like the leveling base, but they don't work if you have the center column. I wish they did. But I'm used to leveling mine the normal way so no biggy.

My leveling base for my RRS tripod works fine with or without the center column... But as long as yours works for you that is most important.

I have the Induro GIT505XXL Grand Series Stealth Carbon Fiber Tripod with a Benro GH2C Gimbal head and I absolutely love it. When your put it down with the Nikon D850 with the 200-500 Nikkor lens it is rock solid. I just can't say enough about how solid this tripod is.

Check out one of the many Vanguard tripods. They don’t break the bank and have excellent support.

I would second that. I just replaced the ball head on mine with an upgrade to the one that came with the tripod. Yes a Vanguard one. The quick release was not arca swiss and needed one for my L bracket. The other one was not arca swiss and their own quick release.

Dang. Reading this I'm realizing how little I know about tripods and heads. Thanks everybody. I get the impression this is an under-discussed aspect when we get caught up in lenses and settings.

Looking for a "good" tripod to handle (max load) a Nikon D750 with a 200-500 lens. Got some questions:
I'm 6'2", so center adjustable column or not.
Weight isn't too much of a concern since I won't be hiking with it.
Don't necessarily want to go bankrupt on a fancy-schmancy carbon fibre one.
Have had my eye on a Dutch Hill P900. Any opinions on this one?
Also been looking at the RRS BH-55 ballhead. Thoughts?
When does a gimble head make more sense than a ballhead?
Thanks.

You may want to check out Acra Tech ball heads. It enables the ability to emulate a gimbal head.
Induro tripods are worth a look.
