Great lighting provided by mother nature. Low clouds, with side lighting coming in underneath the cloud bank from behind me. Technical details of the shot:
Nikon D810
Nikon 35-70 f/2.8 AF-D
35mm
1/80
f/5.6
ISO 64
Cloud White balance
Focus point was on the mast of the nearest sailboat
Handheld
Shot raw and processed in Photoshop CC v20.0.4

I am looking for constructive criticism. What do you think about the exposure, colors, framing, etc... what would you change to make this better? Did I overdo it on the color saturation & vibrance? Should I have shot this at f/8 or f/11 to get more of the background in focus?

IMO, a very gloomy image - I would open the shadows and take some blue and red out of the midtones ( for the foliage). Maybe better as a B&W ??

"...what would you change to make this better?"

In all honesty AdamJB the optic used...

The Nikon 35-70 f/2.8 AF-D at 35mm isn't even close to what the Nikon D810 is capable of...
I sold my copy of this ancient film era lens shortly after I obtained a AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 VR ED refurbished from Nikon USA for $350... This lens significantly exceeds the 35-70 f/2.8 AF-D in acuity, color fidelity and saturation... not to mention having VR which is good for a couple of stops... it also is considerably lighter in weight.

btw, the only parameter that old 35-70 f/2.8 AF-D optic was better with is vignette... albeit that is so easily corrected in post. I will say that the "trick" wedding ring macro was kind of neat, but this old lens simply does resolve fine detail anywhere nearly as good as the newer AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 VR ED.

But don't take my word for this, the MTF curves are readily available and they are revealing of the older optics weakness...

Hope this helps or is at least food for thought...
I wish you well on your journey AdamJB

I'm surprised to hear that the 24-85 (a consumer lens) is this much better than the 35-70 (an old pro lens). Maybe I shouldn't be surprised given the age of the 35-70 design. I do know that many copies of the 35-70 have separation of a glued inner element, which can cause a significant degradation in contrast and excessive susceptibility to flare. Are you sure your copy didn't suffer from this?

All my lenses are old AF-D screw drive lenses, plus a couple of even older pre-AI lenses that were converted. I've been considering selling some of them and buying a modern lens. I've looked at the 24-85, 28-300, and 24-70 (non VR) for the past year, but have not been able to make up my mind. Do you have an MTF chart for the 35-70? The only one I have ever seen is the one on allphotolenses.com, but the graph lines are not labeled. I assume it is showing 10, 30, and 50 lines/mm.

The more knowledgeable folks are providing great tips, but I like the gloomy tone and end result, Adam.

Imagemeister,

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. It was a gloomy day, but not everyone likes that look. I'll experiment with your suggestions and see what I come up with.

UTMike,

Thanks for the feedback, it was a gloomy day out. It started pouring rain shortly after I took this shot.

Actually, I really like what you submitted. The exposure, composition, etc. are spot on. As for the gloomy look, it really boils down to what you like. That's a good photo, one you should be proud of.

Nice photo. When post processing, I try to remember how the scene appeared to my eye at that time (photographic value) since it can be quite a bit different than what the camera was able to capture. Also, what is the mood (artistic value) you want to portray. Ansel Adams was a photographer and an artist with the amazing ability to imagine his final result before even taking the photo. So I guess the important thing is the story you the photographer or you the artist want to tell.

A lovely image of a very wonderful place in Florida. Always a joy to see sailboats and their sacred spots.

I really like what you have. You've highlighted the sailboat in front....maybe very minor lightning of the hull, but the eye goes to the boat. Making the whole image brighter flattens the perspective. The clouds are interesting and portray the light that would have been on a day like that. I'm not a professional, but I know what I like. Nice image.
