Thanks for the historical information, and the beautiful photos you posted. Negligence, is most likely the cause of this horrific fire. Rebuilding would cost billions in dollars. But, if the whole world donated funds. It could be accomplished. This Cathedral had a grand spectacle, as compared to the Egyptian Pyramids. Because of the time and manpower spent, to complete the work. You don't have to be a Catholic, to appreciate the beauty of a Cathedral.

You're welcome.

It's really a big loss - religious, historical, cultural - not only for France but the whole world.

OMG! The most revered catholic church after the St. Peter's Basilica. So many history happened at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. One of the must-see places not only in Paris but the whole of France. We were there in 2015. Had solemn memories of the Notre Dame Cathedral. A magnificent icon of France. A big loss. I am terribly sad; virtually in tears.

Indeed it is a great tragedy. Thanks for your memories from better times.

I'm still stunned. We enjoyed Paris so much especially Notre Dame that we vowed to return someday. Now that Notre Dame gone, the probability of returning just plummeted to slim to zero. Glad we have some memories of this iconic place.

Here's a couple more photos:

Thanks for more lovely images Sunnely.

The latest images of the inside shows that it was not completely destroyed - in fact, you can see the cross and the alter. Apparently 16 of the historic statues had been removed from the roof for the renovation and were spared along with at least one of the ancient (1250 AD) round stained glass windows in the transept arms. The towers and a large portion of the interior stonework are intact, so while a great sadness, perhaps not the total loss we had feared. President Macron says that it will be rebuilt to its former glory, and I have no doubt that it will be restored. A blessing that it survived - wounded, but not deceased.

Notre Dame is not gone - it will just have a slow recovery. CNN has been showing a photo of the main altar as it is now ... the first thing I noticed was the bright cross still shining bright; time will be necessary, but the cathedral will return. Your photos are special, but the future will bring new chances for new photos.

My motto has always been "Take photos today before tomorrow comes and everything changes"

I flipped News stations. One News source did confirm what you stated. The other News source did not. They will probably just knock the old building down, sell the destruction as souvenirs, salvage what they can. And rebuild. The new one will require building earthquake codes, and have fire retardants installed on the roof and interior, and perhaps a sprinkling fire system. The bells are OK. But, the way the world is today. The new Cathedral could be in danger. France, has had problems with terrorists in past years. And Christians are a target.

Please don't be so cynical.
“We will rebuild it together. It will undoubtedly be part of French destiny and our project for the years to come,” a visibly moved Macron said.

Thank you for posting the photos. There was little chance I would ever get to Paris, and I was hoping someone would post photos to show just what I missed.
Latest word on the news was that some of the relics and art was saved at least. Not sure if the fire is wholly out yet.

You are welcome. Some relics saved is better than none. No doubt Notre Dame will rebuild. Can't just let 800 years of mankind's history go up in smoke. Thirteen million visitors yearly, Christians and not, will wait no matter how long it takes. Hope I'm still around to see it when the time comes.

You're welcome, Photogirl17. I was lucky to have seen it before this tragedy occurred during my lifetime.

How heartbreaking. I read that 1500 firefighters were on scene. But obviously that fire was going to be pretty impossible to fight - lots of old wood inside a huge very tall stone chimney. One of history's most important icons - one of mankind's most stunning accomplishments, considering construction started in the 1100's!
