Nikon shutter “hanging”

In the last 4 days my Nikon D-500 has started hanging up in the middle of a shot and thereby giving me an ERR message. When I press the shutter again it finished closing and goes on. Any suggestions? This group is full of camera gurus and I try to never miss a days info! TYI

This is a long shot, but the first thing I would do is go into the menu and reset to the original factory settings and make sure you have a fully charged good battery, which you can also check in the menu. Also try a different lens or at least make sure the contacts are clean and the lens seats well on the mount. After that, I would take it to a local camera shop and see if they can help you with the problem OR get online or on the phone with Nikon and ask their advice. If it is a US camera Nikon will probably fix it under warranty unless your problem started after it was dropped. It's a good idea to register it on Nikon's website if you haven't already. Good luck.

I have a D500. Err messages are explained starting on pg.355 in the manual. If Err is flashing, it can be numerous things.

I would suggest calling Nikon (1-800-645-6687) you want service and support. I would hear it from the horses mouth, not someone here.

I had a similar problem with one of my Nikons. The problem turned to be a defective battery. I switched batteries, and it worked perfectly.

If none of the things mentioned here help; run it through a few sensor cleaning cycles, activate/deactivate mirror lockup a few times, change battery, clean contacts, do the resets. If it is an older battery, or there are connection issues (dirty/corrosion) there may not be enough current flowing to complete the cycle, clean contacts and try a fully charged different battery. I have several bodies/batteries that won't function correctly when the battery power drops below approx. 20-22 %. If no change or it starts getting worse call Nikon. If it is very intermittent, it might take them a while to duplicate the problem, so be prepared for that.

This reminds me of my D80 shutter fail, started out occasional, then moved to "issue", only way to take a shot is by pressing the DOF button while depressing the shutter button.....I still have it, I can get a shot almost every other actuation, but not cost effective to fix, so it just sits in the glass case lookin like new, sad little Nikon......... I hear it was a problem that Nikon addressed on some D80's, but mine must not have received the memo!! I hope in your case it is just insufficient battery power, or something simple, and hope it is still in warranty. Good luck!

I don't believe you have to wait 'til Monday; I believe they're available almost all the time.

This sounds like a defective shutter. The sensor that tells the camera to start the timing cycle is or has failed.

Check to see if you accidentally set your bracketing command. This same thing happened to me about a year ago. I had inadvertently set the bracketing command to take 3 pictures and between those 3 shots, the shutter would not open/close for the next shot that I wanted to take. Stray fingers can mess up a camera control. I have had to put a large rubber band around my lens controls as I was constantly moving those little switches every time I handled the lens.
