D3100 Help? Fill Flash at High Shutter Speed?

Thanks to suggestions by several other bee chasers here, I'm trying to catch a bee in flight at 1/4000 shutter speed. I want to add fill flash, but the D3100 defaults to no faster than 1/200 with either the built-in flash or an SB-400. Is there a work-around for this or will I have to use off-camera lighting?

I don't think 3100 supports high speed sync.
Any way to darken the area so that the flash is providing all the light? At a lower power, flashes fire a very short duration, which would probably freeze the motion.

Good point, Goofy, but this is outdoors in afternoon sun.

Kind of hard to overpower the sun with that flash at 1/200th.
Have you considered using reflectors to fill in?

Thanks. I'll try that.

The SB-400 is a very simple speedlight. An SB-600 or SB-700 should sync at high speed via hotshoe TTL.

"The camera can sync at shutter speeds as fast as 1/200 sec with an external flash. The D3100 does not support Auto FP high speed flash sync -- you'll need a more expensive model for that"

So... my choices are (a) Spend $500 for a better flash and a few thousand for a more sophisticated camera, or (b) Go with off-camera lighting I already have. Not a hard choice. :-D

Seriously, thanks for the guidance. Good link provided by Goofy, as I'm still trying to figure out some of the features on my first dslr. Also been Googling this since I posted the question and also found a good explanation of the "why" written by Ken Rockwell in 2009.

Regardless of other people's opinions, Ken has good, readable information.

As nice as the D3100 is it still has it limitations. Good suggestion from Nikonian72. I know it can be frustrating, but keep plugging.

if I remember correctly the built in flash speed is 1/200 sec

if you have any questions on the specs of the camera body go to the nikon.com site type in Nikon d3100 and you will get with some scrolling the page you want--be sure to book mark it for future use

hope that helps

The problem is that the shutter is open on the full sensor for the 1/200th of a second. The shutter is two curtans one opens and then the other closes it. After the 1/200th the 2nd starts closing before the 1st one is all the way open and you have a slit running across your sensor. If you can get a film slr open it and watch how the shutter works. - Dave

If you need the extra light then take the shot at 1/200 as the flash duration may well freeze the action other wise a bit of post processing will probably solve your problem.
