It's my understanding that the stars of our galaxy rotate about its center on roughly the same plane. This is similar to how the planets of the solar system circle the sun. If so, shouldn't the "dounut" of light circling the black hole be rotated about the black hole 90 degrees, thus obscuring the black hole?
That would depend on where you are viewing the the black-hole from. The edge or the front. For example you look at a plate from its edge, you might seen nothing but a line but from the front you might see a round disk. Since nobody really knows exactly what a black-hole really is, can anyone definitively say if a black-hole is a singularity, or a hole in space-time, or a super heavy ball of matter? Thats why these things are so fascinating. There is a great deal of speculation but NO real proof, yet.
