I know it's a lousy shot, but....

Does anyone know what this guy is? I was leaning towards European Starling but my book, although it shows the bird almost exact, the legs, beak, and the feather colors are different. It shows feather yellow, and says the beak should be yellow. Thanks.

That was my first guess when I saw it in the camera but I don't think it is. The female red-winged blackbird doesn't much resemble this guy. According to other photos I have of the f rwb it's not real close. I suppose this could be a juvenile??? The f rwg that I have (and I know it is correct) is gray on the top of the head and has a white stripe right below it.

First it's not a Starling because the Starling has yellow legs in all plumages and a yellow bill only in breeding plumage. The remaining possibilities are: Boat-tailed and Common Grackle and three blackbirds. Plumage patterns are typical to none of these. My experience is none of these, except the Red-winged Blackbird experience wide enough plumage variation to account for this pattern. Therefore, I don't know for sure what it is but I'm sure what it's not.

Additional Information

I have done some additional research and I am now satisfied it is a male Red-winged Blackbird coming into breeding plumage.

I misidentified a similar looking bird in another post as a starling. The folks were quick to let me know I was wrong. According to them it was a juvenile red-wing blackbird.

Since many have IDed it as a juvenile RWBB I will defer, but it sure is different than any I have seen. It does have a Starling look though.

After i read this thread , the bird is not a female or juvenile red wing blackbird as they are brown with stripes. In looking at National Geographic Birds of North America that is the winter plumage of the rusty male blackbird. They winter from the gulf into the northern continental USA in the eastern half of the nation and nest in northern to southern Canada and the New England states. The rusty end of the feathers wear off and summer plumage is then black.
