I do not know whether this has been addressed before in same context, but here it goes: I just purchased a well used D800 from overseas. So, no support from Nikon North America, I am fine with that too.
I did not know the actuation count at the time of purchase on Ebay but it does not bother me to much. However upon checking the shutter actuation count, it is 150000, so be it. I shoot couple hundert's of images in a year between all my cameras.
I love the camera, probably the best I ever had since the FM2, Kowa Six and D2X. It is well beyond my expertise even if I use it as point and shoot ......
My question to the learned ones is: Does anyone on here have and still use the digital camera which has long since crossed the Shutter count limit?
As in my case, there is approximately 50 000 left which might last me my lifetime, considering I have other cameras as well.

Great name for a photography magazine by the way.

None of mine have ever crossed the predicted threshold. I end up buying new ones and selling the old ones to often. Gotta have a new toy, you know! I can tell you this though:
It will fail the next time you use it. OR, it will still be clicking merrily away when we are all dead and buried. OR, sometime in between. I believe that's about as precise as anyone can be.

Unless the manufacturer publishes repair records for shutters. And even then, it will only indicate a min, max, and average shutter count, of repaired cameras.

There's a myth that the cock will crow at dawn.
I have a couple of roosters and they crow whenever they damn well please.
All day.
All night.

The published number of shutter actuations is the mean number of actuations you can expect. It's not a hard number. In general mechanical objects have a bell curve that describes the failure point. Some will fail before the mean and some after. A shutter rated for 200,000 could fail at 200 (although that's not likely). I would expect that you would start to see failure of something like that around 150,000, but it could easily last until 300,000.

I don't know what it costs to replace a shutter since I have never had one fail, but from comments on various forums it appears to be in the couple hundred dollar range (maybe $300-600). Significantly cheaper than buying a new camera but may not be cost effective for a well-used older model.

According to this chart from https://olegkikin.com your D800, @ 150000 actuation's, is about middle aged.
There's a big dropoff at greater than 250,000. So, you've got a way to go.

My D800E shutter count is over 388,000 and counting. Don't let it bother you.
I have a PJ customer with a D3S that has over 1.8 MILLION on its original shutter and still clicking!

Bought a used D800 and at the time I remember reading expected shutter life is somewhere in the 200,000 to 250,000 range, but that's a statistical mean. It could be less or it could be more. My Dr. once told me "you live until you die" so enjoy it while it's alive. Great Camera!

And it doesn't take into account how often the user drops the camera, which is certainly not good for the shutter.

My Canon 5D Mark III had 358,000 shots on it. I just recently had the shutter replaced even though it was still going. You never know.

I wonder if the electronics are more likely to fail than the shutter especially as the years roll by. There is a big difference in shooting a few thousand shots a year vs a few thousand a week...

Usually shutter life is longer than specified by the camera manufacturer. Lets put it this way, you could be using that camera for many years with your photographic style without noticing a failure but keep in mind that electrical and mechanical parts eventually wear out and that could happen to any camera at any time.
Use your new camera and enjoy it. I am sure it will give you plenty of shutter actuations before that shutter dies.

The D800 has a good, durable shutter designed to last. However, 150,000 activations is a lot and you may want to consider replacing the shutter before it dies and have a great camera for awhile longer.
