Sony A7R ii and LA-EA4 adapter

I own the Sony A7Rii and have bought the LA-EA4 adapter for it. The adapter works great with all my other lenses (Sigma, Sony A mount & Minolta) except the 70-200 Tamron. With the Tamron on the camera will not auto focus or manual focus. I've tried everything and still no luck. Anyone have any ideas?

I found even some Canon brand lenses that didn't work well, or in some cases at all. Had nothing to do with aperture, focal length or year made.

My sympathies, sort of. I bought the LA-EA4 back in late 2014 along with an a6000 so I could use it with my A-mount lenses. Perhaps my memory is fuzzy, but I don’t remember reading any claims whatsoever that this adapter would facilitate electronic communication between a Sony E-mount camera and any non-Sony/Minolta lens. Do you have tangible evidence that Sony claimed it would?

There are a couple of threads on other forums reporting no auto focus with Tamron 70-200 + LA-EA4 + A7 combo. It may be the same for the A7Rii. It seems to be an anomaly of that particular lens.

Officially the LAEA4 is only for Sony Alpha, nevertheless it worked fine with Minolta, Sigma and Tamron lenses. It must be something peculiar with the 70-200 Tamron. The adapter works better with the newer cameras the iii line.

No kidding! I guess my memory wasn’t too fuzzy after all.

It sounds like it is specific to that Tamron lens series. I use the LA-EA4 with my Tamron 200-500mm lens and it works (AF) as normal on my A7Rii.

From Tamron's Tech Representative

"Is it the G2 70-200mm? (actually he texted 70-20mm) Or G1?"
"If G2 - it may need an update"

I'm assuming the Tamron is an 'A' mount lens? And I'm assuming it works on an A mount body?

I use the following Minolta AF lenses with both an A7S and A7R II and LA-EA4 (and EA2) with excellent results:

Minolta AF 16mm F/2.8 Fish-Eye Lens
Minolta AF 18-55mm f3.5-5.6
Minolta AF 24mm f/2.8
Minolta AF 28mm f/2.8
Minolta AF Macro 28-135mm f/4-f/4.5
Minolta AF 50mm f/1.4
Minolta AF Macro 100mm f/2.8
Minolta AF 135mm f/2.8
Minolta AF 100-300mm f/4.5-f/5.6
Kenko 1.4x Teleconverter 'Works in auto mode with all of the above
Minolta AF 500mm f/8 Reflex 'The only autofocus reflex lens ever produced

Maybe the Tamron lens' A mount firmware is just different enough to cause problems? I've run into the same problem with Sigma and Tamron Canon EF mount lenses with Canon EF -> FE adapters on both Sony bodies. The only adapter that works (almost) consistently is Sigma's MC-11.

I too have the g1 70-200mm tamron, was very disappointed on my a7iii, never tried it on my a6500, just too bulky. I purchased Sony 70-200 f4 and prolly won’t use the tamron any more. Still have a77 which the tamron works excellently on.
