As we all probably know, now States are allowed to enforce collection of Sales Tax for out-of-state purchases. It seems it is up to each State to work out the details with each major retailer. And there has been much discussion and angst on the UHH about B&H Photo collecting Sale Tax. I was surprised to find that California has still to work out a deal with B&H Photo. I just made a purchase Wednesday and found there to only be shipping added to my cost, no Sales Tax for California! (I know NJ customers are paying and b****ing about it.)

It’s coming everywhere because there’s never been a government entity that doesn’t like more taxes. Lean back and enjoy it.

This has always been the case - sales taxes always (I think) have a corresponding Use Tax equal to the percentage of the sales tax. The only difference is that now the federal govt has greenlighted the ability for states to collect use tax from vendors, since it is nearly impossible to collect it from purchasers.

You can always live in a cave or on a private island if you aren't happy with paying taxes. I am certainly aware of and totally enjoying the benefits of my taxes - and there are many.

Right. It's "like," not "need."

I'm just surprised that California is not yet gone after the Tax on B&H purchases. But they had the much bigger prize of Amazon dot Com a long time ago because Amazon has a major physical presence in California. They have warehouses near were I live, so I often get delivery on Amazon purchases of in less than two days! But for years they've collected CA Sales Tax from Californians. In their earliest days they didn't, back in the Web's wild youth days.

I'm quite aware of the Law in CA about Sales Taxes, but I am also aware that many Web based, especially out of state businesses have ignored the laws in the past. That is slowly ending, as it should. Brick & Mortar stores have complained for years of the unfairness. I'm just shocked how slowly it is changing.

I am paying, but not b****ing about it. Too many other things to worry about. The reason B&H initially started collecting sales tax here had less to do with negotiating a deal with New Jersey as it does with B&H now having a distribution center in the state.

Look at the bright side: People who shop on-line to avoid sales tax now have one less reason not to buy from their local camera store. See, now don't you feel better knowing that internet sales tax collection is helping keep your local store in business? Think of how much it would help the local stores if we could convince the state gov't to collect double sales tax from the internet! I say we start a petition for that!
Bottom line: Most of us wish we had a good local camera store. If we actually got our wish then there would be no avoiding sales tax as many of us have done for so long.

Just because B&H is not yet required to collect California sales tax doesn't mean you don't owe the tax. You are required to pay tax on out of state purchases, called use tax, on your state income tax. You probably won't get caught if you don't pay it, unless your state taxes are audited. That is why the states want internet merchants to collect the tax. But you are still breaking the law if you don't pay it.

Which government services do you receive that you would like to give up for lower taxes?

The "WAMs", the pensions, the thousands - or is it millions - of potholes that never seem to get filled, ...

You are also aware that you no longer pay sales tax. That's a benefit I really enjoy.

Potholes unfilled is not the result of government having too much money, just the opposite. But that you are willing to give up your own retirement to reduce taxes is impressive. I have no idea what Web Access Management you want to give up though.

Individual states don't "work out a deal" with a retailer. The state decides what will be and tells the retailer what the state expects. There's no negotiation and the retailer does not have options.

Prior to the SCOTUS decision and the individual states implementing their tax policies, there was no law for out of state retailers to ignore.
