Camera shopping in Tokyo or Hong Kong.
Does anyone have any experience with buying Nikon DSLRs either in Tokyo or Hong Kong? If you do please describe your experience, did you save any money by buying it there, and if you did buy, where did you buy it. Many thanks.....
Back in the olden days (60's and 70's) we used to save plenty on buying Nikons in Tokyo or Hong Kong. I had colleagues buy and bring me stuff regularly until I was fully stocked. I don't know about today though. I have an idea that the market is pretty much the same here as there.

All service on those cameras will require sending back to Japan as they are considered "Gray Market" by Nikon, USA.

Not!
This is what I got by emailing Nikon
Question details:
If I buy a Nikon camera from Japan and bring it back to the USA. Would Nikon service it if I need it serviced?

Hello xxxxxx,
Thank you for contacting Nikon, I hope your day is going well.
You can send it in for service if it needs it, just make sure you keep your proof of purchase, because you would have to provide a copy.
Thank you

Great. Being wrong, when faced with facts, doesn't bother me at all, 'cause I learned something.
Take bunches of pictures and share them here on UHH.

Any new Nikon equipment bought there will not be warrantied in the US when you return.
Andy used Nikon equipment bought there will not be worked on by Nikonusa when you return.

Strange. That goes against everything I've heard. Good to know, though. So Nikon USA will service a non-Nikon USA product.

Because a camera bought from an authorized dealer in Japan is not a gray market camera. I didn't ask about the warranty and perhaps to have warranty service I will have to send it to Japan but Nikon will service it because it's not a gray market camera. That is why they requires the receipt to prove that it was bought in Japan and not in the US.

If your brother was in the military then they could buy stuff for a lot less at the post exchange. If he were to buy them in Vietnam at the stores they would be a lot more expensive than in the USA. Those stuff were considered luxury and the Vietnamese government back then would put a 200% tax on them.

In Japan on the way back and trips. He was a supply Sgt and "non-standard" purchasing and shipping opportunities.
I was in both places in the late 70's. In Hong Kong everybody speaks English but no so in Japan where it could be difficult to find persons who speaks it.
At the time I visited scams were common like it happened to a friend of mine who bought a Nikon F, apparently assembled in Hong Kong that had not been adjusted. I mean shutter off, meter off. While in Japan the prices were more expensive than in NY. Anything bought there with the Nikon brand is considered in this country gray market and Nikon will not serve those cameras and lenses.
Second hand stores are common in Japan but you better know what you are buying.
New stuff is more expensive in Tokyo. I have looked.

There are
many camera stores in Tokyo. The BIC store near Tokyo station is easy to find.
You will probably find an English speaker at any major store. Warranties are your burden. Be ready to
pay a lot.
They are fun to look around in though.
