Always a teat to learn a little more about these amazing creatures Doc, thanks! These kind of meetups help to keep us vital. Looking forward to more photos from this trip.
Once an educator...... Just posted some damsels. Part 2 -Doc
I just got back from the Southeastern Meeting of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas in Crestview, FL. Or survey area was in the Blackwater Wildlife Management Area and Blackwater Forest Fishheries Area near Holt, Florida. Our target species was the Say's Spiketail (Cordulegaster sayi). I saw one but didn't get a shot of it. It is one of the most poorly known dragonflies of the Southeastern US. The other target species were Twin Striped Clubtail (Hylogomphus geminatum), Westfall's Clubtail (Phanogomphus westfalli) and Hodge's Clubtail (Phanogomphus hodgesi). Those are shown below. These dragons are of the Gomphidae family. Most Gomphidae will perch on the ground making for a cluttered background. The Twin Striped however, wil usually perch about three feet off the ground near their clear sandy bottom stream. They were formerly in the Gomphus genus. The subgenera have now all been elevated to genera in the US. Of the original 53 Gomphus genera there are only 11 left with that designation, none of which are in the Western hemisphere. (That will keep the interns busy changing identification labels). It was a great meeting. I got to catch up with a lot of friends, see a part of Florida I had not seen before and make a few new friends. Enjoy. I will be posting more. -Doc
I should also add that I have a new dragon post in the Macrophotography section. I think you will like it, and I could sure use some help in an ID.
Yeah I saw that post. I really did like it. As for your Stylurus spiniceps I think the thoracic stripe pattern more closely resembles your other thought - Stylurus noatus. A ventral shot would help eliminate Arrow Clubtail. A look at the terminal appendages would help too. However it's a great shot. I posted some damsels from the survey and have a few more dragons to post this afternoon. -Doc
Hi Corky. Glad you enjoyed it. It was a fun trip. I really had to get a jump on the season. It will be about 3 weeks before we get emergents up here. I just posted the third and last set from the trip. I hope everything is well with you. Have a great day! -Doc
Hi Topcat. Thanks for taking the time to look in at my work and the fine comment. I'm glad you liked it. It was a great survey. Have a wonderful weekend. -Doc
