Greetings All!
Where have you had good experiences in sending out manual 35mm film cameras for repair? Mine are mid-sixties Nikon F's which I believe a good CLA now would be in order. Thanks in advance!

Good Question...?
I know of a service and repair shops for Topcon / Exakta and Leica but have never had my Nikon's serviced.
Another question is: When sending in a Nikon camera for CLA and service does the technician want it sent with the lens or without? The name of a quality service provider is most welcomed.
When I last had a Topcon serviced, I was told no lens was required, the evaluation / report provided on return was based on the 5.8cm f1:1.4 standard lens of thier own testing rig. Leica service is handled with the owner's attached lens. That lens was also inspected and evaluated as part of the CLA service.
I still use my Nikon's. Both the Nikon F (w/Photomic meter) and Nikkormat FT have been flawless
in their functions. However as you noted, they are getting old. ...like me...ha ha!!! David C.

Gladly!

The first one I got in the sixties (serial: 650xxxx) is getting a little sticky... My dear spouse suggested- "...use a little WD40..."

I've used Garry's Camera Repair a number of times and have been very satisfied with the work they did. Reasonable prices, too.

I would send it to Nikon. The techs there probably have limited experience with film cameras, but that would be my first choice. You can start the process online.

Zacks camera Repair in Providence, RI. They have CLA’d and repaired vintage Petri, Canonets, Minolta, Pentax, Ansco folders, and miscellaneous lenses for me many times. Turn around time may be up to six weeks but they do excellent work - they must have a lot of cameras in their pipeline.

Tempe Camera Repair. However, check with them first. I've had my F worked on several times starting in 1978.

You might want to check out Midwest Camera Repair. They have worked on, and rebuilt, older lenses for me and have done a quality, timely and reasonably priced repair. Since the lenses were older, you might check to see if they can work on your camera.

Here is the web site link: http://midwestcamera.com

Based on recommendations here, I sent a Mamiya 645 to Kurt's for CLA. They told me it would take three to four weeks when we spoke on the phone for authorization after they had the camera in hand. It actually took nearly six months. After about three months, I began calling every couple of weeks to try to find out what was going on. No matter when I called, they were never able to tell me anything because "the technician working on that camera is not in today". The camera eventually made it home and seems to be working well. However, people on this site seemed to think the price of about $350 for the work was too high. I hope that the problems I experienced were simply related to the camera not being a 35mm, but I seriously doubt I will ever send them another camera to work on. If you provide a service long enough, there is going to be someone dissatisfied with the service you provide. I hope I am simply that one person, but for my next film camera service, I will be looking elsewhere.

I highly recommend Authorized Photo Service which offers Nikon authorized service. They have worked on my F, F2, digital and even my recent acquisition, a Nikon S2 rangefinder. See nikoncamerarepair.com
or call 800-406-2046.

Good Question...? br I know of a service and rep... (show quote)

When you find a servicer or a choice of them, have a conversation with them FIRST. Ship with or without lens/batteries/any other attachments? Do they give an estimate BEFORE doing any work? What if they find more/expensive problems once they start? What exactly will they do? Who pays return shipping if no work is done?

Decide for yourself how much money you're willing to sink into an old camera. A few years ago I paid $160.00 to have a newly-acquired F2 Photomic checked out. That covered just CLA and exam. Needed a replacement battery compartment, which was available and a few bucks more. I conversed with servicer several times throughout the time.

Never use WD 40 on a camera!
