Always good to consult the camera manual!

When the Sigma 600mm mirror lens in a Pentax K mount showed up on KEH I just had to have it. When Fedex delivered it I mounted it on my K20D and had a look through it. Yep, razor thin focus and instead of the ISO display I got error number 2080. I could look through the lens but the camera wouldn't fire. Yesterday I got to meandering through the appendix of the manual and found that a selection in the Custom menu would allow me to enable using the aperture ring (there is none; the lens is fixed at f8). Five pages of settings later I found it; the very last item (#30) in the menu. Set it to enable and the camera shoots with it just fine. No light metering to set the shutter speed so I guessed at 1/200th for a cloudy day at f8. A bit dark but a usable shot to test the lens.

Usually I download the camera manual before purchasing and have it just about fully memorized by the time the camera is finally in my hands. I'm always surprised how few people do the same.

My cameras came with a manual packed with it. I find the printed manual more efficient because I can carry it with me in my camera bag.

Or you could print out the most useful pages from the PDF manual and staple them together, and thereby have a more compact version in your camera bag. I'm sure there are plenty of pages in the manual (info on compatible accessories, for example) that you don't need to have at all times with you.

Good idea but that would put those pages on 8.5 x 11 paper. My manual is 4.75 x 6.5 x 5/8, has a stiff paper cover and is bound solidly making it a bit more convenient to carry. Plus I don’t have to use my ink, paper and time to print it out. Just my preference.
