I’m looking at getting a Mac, primarily for photo editing purposes. Can the MacBook Air do a good job of photo editing, or should I get the Pro? Thanks in advance for any comments.

I have been using Macs since about 1999 or 2000. I use a MacBookPro and I love it. I also have a wide gamut 27" monitor I use for photography editing and retouching. But sometimes I just use the MBP by itself. The air should be ok too but you can get faster processors and more storage on the MacBookPro. I suggest you use Apples site to compare specs. Also you definitely want the Retina display.

I think the iMac is also worth a look if a desktop system is in your purview. It's a better value than the MacBookPro but if you have to have a laptop then the iMac won't work.

I’ll take a look at the iMac as well. I don’t have to have a laptop. Thanks for the help.

I suggest the Pro. I used the Air for years and it was/is great. As I moved up my cameras from a D70S-D300-D700-D810....now Z6. I found that as soon as I got to the D810, and I shoot RAW; the edit time increased significantly. I needed more power. I did the comparisons and found that the Air's specs do not compare to the processing speed of the Pros. I just upgraded from my Air to a Pro. Of course there are ways to improve the speed of parts of the workflow, but nothing substitutes for internal processing speed. If you want a laptop, then go with the Pro.

Thanks, JB. That’s the kind of answer I was looking for.

JB, do you think 8GB of memory will suffice? Or should I go with 16?

I use my MacBook Air with LR to make a backup when on a shoot. Oftentimes, I'll also so some processing, but not more than 20 or so pics. I can put the Air in a backpack for airplane trips so I like that. But I would not recommend it as a primary photography computer. I use a desktop for that. BTW, just purchased the new MacBook Air which, I think, is arriving tomorrow.

I am a potential Pro purchaser especially since my 2012 iMac with only 8GB of Ram and an i5 processor just isn’t cutting it. Now, I’ve heard rumors that Apple might intro a MacBook Pro 14 this fall, configurable with lots of memory, SSD storage to 1TB, and possibly with a new AMD chip! Oh boy, sign me up if that’s true! But, is this pie-in-the-sky, or do you think this for real? Thanks, Geographer
